    ... 500 prisoners, there were approximately 300 escape attempts and 31 prisoners made it 'home' and usually sent a cheeky postcard to the camp commandant and sometimes left an equally cheeky message as they left saying such things as 'I can't stand the COLD anymore in Colditz- auf Wiedersehen! The escape museum contained amazing items made from scrapes such as a sewing machine which the German's permitted to make theatre costumes but the prisoners used 'out of hours' ...
