We aren't exactly sure which way we will go but we do know that we are now leaving the East Coast and heading inland and then up towards Chicago, a few days away. ... Luther King, Jr. Memorial is the Mall's first memorial to an African-American. It's very impressive and pleasantly set among the famous cherry blossom trees of the Tidal Basin.

The downtown area of Washington is clean and open, with lots of security, including helicopters, and very well dressed public servants and office workers. It contrasts greatly with the outer suburbs, and a I'm glad we had the chance to see the whole city.

The Library of Congress was very impressive. The building itself is worth a visit. Notable exhibits include Abraham Lincoln's personal library (a vast collection), and a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. This was the first major book printed after the invention of the printing press in c. 1450. It is one of only 3 perfect copies known to exist in the world.
