... twin concrete tracks that just be for a tractor type vehicle. But very rough, and unbelievably, it gets steeper. Up and up he continues. The trees are so thick that you cannot see the castle or village or anything really. After about 30 minutes of this he stops with heart thumping and decides this must be the wrong way. Down he goes, having to be extra careful as the path is quite treacherous going down. Rough steep and slippery. Eventually gets back ...

There were a few cars parked and then a sign we were unsure about - did it mean no entry? Or no parking? ... a bit and there is a lovely old cedar tree with a table and chairs under with glorious views over the lake. This was our lunch spot. I am sure I have seen this scene in movies. There we are sitting at a table overlooking the lake, little stone wall behind and antipasto and wine being enjoyed. This is exactly how I pictured our visit to Lake Como. I feel sorry for all you poor people stuck at work and reading this..... We spent ...

... for fuel. Nothing to worry about, but our troubles really began when we were driving down a steep road heading towards Lake Maggiore. Red conked out. She stalled suddenly and unexpectedly; the engine just stopped, leaving us freewheeling downhill. But as luck would have it, and you cannot get much luckier than this, we came to rest on the forecourt of a small mechanical workshop. Unluckily, and incredibly frustratingly, the extremely well-meaning young man inside was ...
