... I was there for the last day of the Barcolana
Regatta, a two weekend long sailing festival. That would explain why I could
not find any accommodation for Saturday night in Trieste while there was plenty
available for Sunday night. This being Italy any festival also becomes a
festival of food and wine and music as well as the main purpose, and the
waterfront was lined with booths selling all kinds of Italian products and very

... a room to myself for the price of a bunk, I was the only one
staying in the whole hostel without any staff present.

I picked Restauracija Kotlar for dinner because getting
there involved the shortest period of drenching and found another great
reasonably priced meal with incredibly friendly service. I went for a standard

Struklji. What are struklji? Well, a kind ...

Slovenia has only 16 miles of coastline, not much compared to Croatia's thousands of miles of coast when you include all of its islands and peninsulas. The short stretch is quite developed with an industrial port city (Koper), a swank resort (Portoroz), and a few other old towns. The one real attraction, though, is Piran, a beautiful old town on a peninsula similar to Porec and Rovinj in Croatian Istria but ...

... the border with Slovenia and within about 2 kilometres of crossing the border the countryside had completely changed. The dry rocky mountains were gone, replaced by lots of trees and green grass. We bought a toll vignette (sticker for the windscreen to travel on the road) and bought some groceries. We stayed the night at a campground at Skocjan. It was really just a big grassy paddock down quite a steep drive.

... king a little more than he bargained for. Hence the expression "caught with his pants down" (according to the tour guide).

It was pouring rain when we arrived at the castle so external photography was difficult. While the interior tour was interesting, there is nothing but a series of empty rooms. Even the armoury had been looted so there was little to see.
