... after five weeks of dodging them in every city and village! We found our way to the vaporetto station, then arrived at our hotel which is in a quiet residential corner of the island. Dumped our luggage and went off to investigate. Weather forecast is not looking good , rain predicted so we thought we would have a quick look while it was still fine. Up and down little allay, over canals and it was really cool. Then we came upon a fruit market in one of the squares just ...

... who was in the pew praying did not think it was so cool). Next we parked in Montepulciano and walked up the windy cobblestone tiny roads to one of the highest points where there is the Piazza Grande is.... And the clock tower building where the scene was shot. I had a few photos, we had a nice lunch in the piazza and then went to the top of the clock tower for a nice lookout over the rest of Montepulciano. We then began our hour long drive ...

Within the walls themselves is a tourism office which--surprise! is open even though it's a Sunday. Although small, it is fun to wander around, walking along the walls... under them... Relaxing in the piazza which has a particularly noble feel to ...

Day 263 7 hrs, 5.5 kms Day totals: 16 hrs, 14.6 My next stop turns out a bit better. Once again, the "heart" of the town is a ways away from the train station, but I decide to hike to it anyways. This time I head towards the sea... then through it. Ortabella is actaully a little finger of land reaching far out into a large lagoon, with a sliver of land on each side separating it from the sea, and a mountain at the ...

1649. The Empty Sector of Tuscany

Day 263 2 hrs, 2 kms Most of the population of Tuscany is in the north where I plan to do a Superhike through 6 of its provinces. In the south is the large province of Grossetto, which looks quite empty on the map. Seems a bit odd, as most of Italy is pretty densely populated. I hop on the train and soon we're speeding across the coastal plains between the sea and the mountains. No beach towns every couple of miles as on the Adriatic--it all does ...
