Monday was our last day in Japan. We were flying out till later that evening so we had the morning in town then caught the bus and shinkansen back to Tokyo. It had been a great 10 day holiday – we can’t wait to come ...

    Now we needed to take:
    • 45 minute bus ride to Kabayashi Onsen stop.
    • 30 minute hike (up the mountain, through the woods and snow and mud) to ...

    ... the floor.
Our room overlooks the train line and Nagano train station, so we get to see the trains come and go, even the Shinkansen.
We take a walk around the area and find a supermarket to get some breakfast supplies.

What a great nights sleep in a real bed. We both slept really well and the noise from the trains did not bother us at all. Opening the blinds reveals a magnificent day with nothing but blue sky and ...

... walkway. This is the main method of reaching the bedrooms when the property is full. Sound travels through the whole building without issue, including the creaking of this old structure. Some walls are made of cob (a straw and mud mixture), which hold up well. A great modern convenience is the inclusion of sliding wooden framed glass doors, to keep the wooden corridors from the elements. Kind of like double glazing they provide a little extra insulation, ...
