Liepaja has an interesting history and has been through many wars. It was previously occupied by the Germans during World War I, was annexed by the Soviet Union during World War II and then lost to the Germans again. Liepaja went back to the Russians at the end of the war and it wasn't until Latvia gained it's independence that it was free again.

Still no internet so no 'Today' programme to listen to as we prepared ourselves for the day, as the rain fell steadily. The first genuinely rainy day we have experienced. Not bad in 48 days! So we're here in Liepāja now, on the west coast of Latvia - Seems we are forever on the move!!

Liepāja is the third largest city in Latvia, known for it's arts, music and beautiful beaches - full of old, beautiful wooden buildings, on an irregular patchwork of little cobbled streets.

We are really enjoying staying with a family over here...so nice to have that atmosphere...and they are incredibly wonderful hosts :)
