... tapas and wine there a couple of times as well – it was a very nice place to enjoy the Spanish experience.
Our week in Frigiliana was outstanding. Refreshing, rejuvenating, connecting with friends and family, and just what the doctor ordered. We are grateful that our friends David and Karen suggested this place (they stayed there a few years back and loved it as well). It is a place we definitely could see visiting again.
... in the center while a gypsie woman danced for money. From this point you could see all the Siera Nevadas intersecting and bordering the city. This mountainous landscape with the sun melting into pink and purple behind it sent my mind and eyes into awe. Below the whole city packed tightly together, shined their lights for the evening. From up there Granada looked like only one small cluster compared to the mountain range surrounding it. Atop a mountain straight ...
... in this area. So, of course, we had to try it out. It was pretty stuffy inside. Not sure they were ready for Shae. :) The salads were great but the sea bass was horrible. Mike had high hopes, but he was disappointed again with the fish. At least Shae enjoyed her chocolate ice cream dessert. We're heading out tomorrow for Granada.
... a bucket of scraps and headed out to feed the donkeys. Along the way she was accosted by a cute little pot-bellied pig who stole her bucket and started munching! He was so cute!
After the donkey sanctuary we headed out for a drive to explore the area more. The beaches are surround by beautiful mountains. We headed up to a mountain village called Frigiliana. We had a nice lunch there and set out to explore the rest of the area. After a 1.5 hour ...
... chance to have photos with the Rocks very own breed of monkey. They are unique to Gibralta and have no tail. They are very calm even posing for photos with us!
We hired a taxi and had a tour of the rock and impressive caves within the rock. The caves are apparently some of the oldest and deepest in the world and they have even set up an ampi theatre inside the caves for music performances... very cool.
Anyway we made it to the top of the ...
... Sultans would make political decisions looking out over the city. Further on we saw the Alcazabar fortress which is the oldest part of the complex dated in the 9th century. We climbed the watchtower for an amazing view over Granada and across the snowcapped Sierra Nevadas. Fantastic day. Saturday we had a catch up and lounged in the sun of the Plaza. Sunday we took the train to Madrid then caught the plane to Morocco the next day.
Granada, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands journeaux... cold, wet, tired, no sheets, bad laundry facilities, etc; 2) Our Program Coordinator, Ramiro, was pretty ill (in the actually sick sense) so we figured our optimism would help us out a little bit 3) Well, to put it simply, it was really entertaining to try and put a smile on the miserable faces of some members of the program 4) We were able to make silly, but effective nicknames for the morning such as Optimistic ...
Granada, Spain jakester21... during the so-called 'Age of Exploration' and Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon in Spanish) sailed from here on a couple of his voyages to the Americas. Cadiz turns out to be a very interesting city: it apparently is the oldest continuously occupied city in Western Europe (from earlier than 900BC), having been started as a trading post by the Phoenicians, then settled by Carthage, then Greeks, and eventually it became a major Roman city. I visited a fantastic museum built ...
Granada, Andalusia, Spain everardt... was absolutely hilarious. I didn't get to say goodbye to him though, no one did. He just kind of dissapeared. There are so many other people I met and befriended, but those listed are the people that really touched me. We all shared so many deep conversations with each other. We talked about our fears, our dreams, our desires, our problems...complications back home, why we were traveling, our favorite things thus far, our major ****up stories. I shared my fear about law ...
