A second busy day in Singapore

... and when we went looking for them, we found an open grassy area not far from the hotel, where a group of enthusiasts were flying remote controlled colourful kites. One big one was shaped like an aeroplane, and they flew around to music, which included, would you believe, Achey Breaky Heart. So at about 9.30pm on our last night in Singapore we were sitting on the kerb watching kites.
Great fun, and a happy end to our time in Singapore.

A trip to the Zoo

... I stalked it through the undergrowth and took a video of it peeking out from behind trees and bushes. The lemurs were pretty mischievous too as they kept chasing each other up trees. Another great sight was the huge colony of hamaydras baboons. There are about eight of them, and they're really funny to watch, not just because they behave in a very human-like manner, but because they have absolutely ludicrous, massive red *****. The adult male's was ...

National Day Parade...and rehearsal

... views of the floating stage and marina! We had to get there a bit early as we had assigned sections but no assigned seats. Steve and I picked seats with ample leg room...which we didn't think would also be a major traffic zone for the photographers and reporters. While we were sitting, waiting for the show to start in the hot, hot sun, we started looking through our goodie bags. There were Singaporean themed tatoos and of ...

Our SE jouney begins...Singapore

... So, our first leg of the trip will have us anchored in Singapore and employed...well, at least one of us for now.

July 1st, 2009, we woke up and spent every last minute tieing up loose ends around the house. We were finally able to exhale once we passed the security check at the Honolulu Airport. The past was behind us and now our minds needed to refocus on what was to be our future. We flew United/ANA through Narita, which split the ...

Singapore History 101

... Provinces in China to Singapore, after facing floods and famines and corrupt leaders for generations. Singapore, meaning Lion’s City, was a place where there was work and people could earn a living and start a new life… A highlight of Chinatown, besides the food and temples, was definitely the Chinese Heritage Museum. In the centre of Chinatown on Pagoda St, is an old “shophouse” that I would assume used to house Chinese families in “cubicles” back ...

Singapore: a tour of three religions.

... storm. Ironically the main God of this temple, is Mariamman, who originated as an ancient village goddess of fertility and rain! Next I visited the Islamic Mosque, Jamae Chulia Mosque. It was built by the Chulias , Tamil Muslims from the famous Chola Kingdom of Tamil Nadu along the Coromandel Coast of Southern India, who were among Singapore's earliest immigrants and were responsible for building some of Chinatown's other historic monuments. They ...

Sleepless in Sentosa

... br>And then the lights went out and the show was over.

As I took one last glimpse at the resort, leaving it suddenly became a bittersweet episode of our short but sweet visit to Singapore. For I realized at that instant that it would probably take quite a long time before I'll get to revisit the place. Nonetheless, I still found myself putting Sentosa and the rest of Singapore on my "must-come-back" list of destinations.
