... A little way along, the track got very rough and the climb to the top started. Chucking it up a couple of gears and the climb wasn't anything to difficult, just rocky riding. Hard tail mountain bikes sure are ******* the tail! Soon enough I made it to the top and got an excellent view of the lagoon on one side, and the Baltic Sea on the other. As I found out later, it was actually the highest dune you can climb along the whole bike track.

... decided to walk to the Baltic Sea on the western edge. The walk was through some very nice pine forest but closer to the sea the pines were interspersed with oak and birch. The Spit used to have a heavy timber industry that in years past, earned the area the name of the "Sahara of Lithuania". Thankfully it is now a national park and serious re-vegetation efforts have preserved a lot of the ecosystem.

It was finally removed in 1978, after it became clear that United States’ surveillance satellites had discovered the site. Furthermore, the missiles, which were never upgraded, had now become obsolete.
