From the period of the Crusades is ...

In 408 bce these three cities joined to found the island's capital city, also called Rhodes. Rhodes city and island played a vigorous role in subsequent ancient Greek and Roman history, its most memorable ...

So we are delayed by high winds (but not bad weather) on Symi. At last we have mustered up the energy to return to the 500 steps of the Kali Strata and enjoy it at a more leisurely pace. We have also read a little more about the history. A lucrative ship building industry bought prosperity to the island in the 19th century and many gracious mansions were built along the Kali Strata all in the neo-classical style.
