The hotel in Gruyeres was wonderful. Once the town cleared out of all of the tourists, it was completely quiet except for the few hotel guests at this time of year. The sweet woman at the reception recommended the hotel right below the castle for dinner. We decided to try out the Swiss traditional "fondu" for the first time. Lucerne, Pilatus, and the week in review
... it and loved it. We picked at the rock up high enough to be surrounded by clouds, and marveled that we were still standing on solid earth. We climbed high enough to see a group of blackbirds that lived high enough that they relied on humans for food, and so were not at all afraid of us. We spotted a tiny church on the mountainside, and thought about the devotion it must take to attend services there every week, even in the snow.

Day 38 - Ballenburg
After the excitement of yesterday we decide on a more relaxed day out at Ballenburg open air museum. We had gone to a similar museum in the Black Forest last year and enjoyed it so could the swiss do better? We took a regional train to Brienz (free on our Eurail pass) and then a local bus to Ballenburg (~15SFr return) which took us to the east entrance of the museum. Beautiful lake, beautiful architecture, I visited an amaying church near the lake, took tons of pictures of everzthing... had a great daz.
