I haven't seen the chair of my dissertation, mentor and friend, Cynthia Franklin in more than 12 years and we happened upon each other in China of all places. She was travelling through the country conducting trainings. We were lucky enough to meet up in the beautiful Hangzhou - a short train ride from Shanghai. The lotuses were in bloom so we were treated to a feast for the eyes and soul. It was a beautiful day and so wonderful to catch up with an old friend and ...

I was grateful to be wearing very washable flip flops. We went directly from the market to a garden and ancient residence that would have housed what the tour guide called "Chinese Bill Gates" a long time ago. It was an interesting example of ...

Then we watched stalls being wheeled down the street ...

... street a bit and met some lovely stray dogs that weren't poodles like most of the dogs here and stopped in a store where a lady asked if we were Russian. We look Russian. (The Russian thing mainly happens to me in Hangzhou, Shanghai is international enough people have seen plenty of blonde and red haired Americans.) we also stopped at Dan's favorite noodle people. They are from Mao Zedong's hometown, Shaoshan in Hunan, and make some delicious spicy noodles! Hooray for ...

... keep pollution down within the city.

We ended the day by heading back to the lake for a short cruise. One thing that happens to me is that people like to have a photo with me, as I am a westerner. It's very sweet when they ask, although I was a little confused when it first happened. This happened to me on the boat again and I thought it was quite fun.

    Today was a fabulous day.
