We had heard of the Perhentian Islands from a couple we had met whilst staying in the Flores port of Labuan Bajo. They told us of the peace, quiet and lack of motorised land transport. The clincher, though was the price of the diving. At 70 ringgits, or less for multiple dives, it works out at about 10 a dive. This is cheap. Very, very, very, very, very cheap. Get the idea?

OK it's not world class drift diving, there are no big walls, and there is a distinct ...

The food was good but not that good! We did however manage to book our snorkelling trip with them, but being one of the cheapest for snorkelling we could find, we hoped the service would be better than that of the restaurant's. We had prior warning that the accommodation on the island was 'proper backpackers ...

... seater minivan only have 5 of us in it! We thought he was bound to stop and collect more people but we were wrong; we were on our way to Kuala Besut! We have never been on such a bumpy minivan journey on what looked like well maintained tarmac'd dual carriage ways! I mean we were close to bumping our heads on the ceiling! It was awful! We were totally out of luck if we thought we were going to be getting any shut eye on this bus!! Luckily after an hour of a bumpy ...

We took an overnight bus from Butterworth on the west coast of the Peninsula to Kuala Besut on the east coast. Neither of us got any sleep as the driver would switch all the lights on every time we got to a stop, and there were many through the night. At 5.30am we arrived at our destination pretty exhausted and wanting a bed. We had to wait 1 1/2 hours at the port as the first boat ...
