(Jim) We loved Queenstown, New Zealand so much so that we tried hard to extend our stay by three days. Now we're glad we didn't, because the Blue Mountains turned out to be another favorite spot. The Blue Mountains are about two hours west of Sydney. The "Blue" part refers to the blue haze that hangs over the valleys, caused by tiny droplets of eucalyptus oil. The topography here is dramatic. The towns are up on a plateau, connected by the Cliff Road that winds along an almost-sheer 1,000 fee...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia oneyearawayWe flew out of Alice Springs on the 20th back to Sydney (again some good pictures of the City on final approach) and our accommodation for the night was the Railway YHA Hostel next to Sydney Central Station. Pretty good, very busy and with the usual assortment of traveller types and gap year students. Our bags at this point are really heavy and we will be sending some stuff back soon. The next day was a trip to the Blue Mountains, with an overnight stay at the Lilianfels Hotel & Spa. Unfo...
Sydney, Australia waspey
... along the cliff edges, but none of the ones I saw are very powerful. At the end of my walk was a circuit which went around an old coal mine area, one of the main reasons for the development of the area. The three options for getting back up the cliff were walking, the Scenic Railway, which is essentially a chair lift on a train track, and the Flyway, a cable car through the skies, which I took! This was probably ...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia eddiemetal... cold, wet and very windy. When we arrived in Sydney it was 30C. What a difference. We took at detour and drove over the Harbour Bridge and saw the Opera House for the first time. We then headed west and started climbing up towards Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. The higher we got, the more the temperature dropped. By the time we reached Katoomba it was 10C and very cold! It was also dark and threatening rain, so we couldn't really ...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia busafam... have been designed so that no touching is involved at all. Our adventure caving did the opposite and we touched alot, but none of it on the crystal rock. My caving experience was immense and I loved every part of it. Wendy and Sasha were in their 50's and 40's and they said they even had jobs available for new recruits to work up to be guide and apparently it pays well...hmmmm!!! Its never too late. Thing is, I just love all this outdoors stuff. Given the chance ...
Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia clairebr... it would be a bit on the pricey side, but when you are a café at the end of a grueling trail, well, it's not so hard to entice some weary hikers through your doors, no matter what the cost ;) And we were no exception! Our budget-conscious will had been beaten out of us by the trail and we were in no position to quibble about prices... especially since we would need to walk another 20min to get back to our car! These café owners are not so dumb I think.

Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia isaetjef... tale. Plus we knocked over an hour off the stated time. We also saw and climbed the Furber Stairs with lots of interesting lookouts along the way. There were waterfalls aplenty too, with our trips to the Katoomba falls and the Leura Cascades. The Leura Cascades were awesome and strangely peaceful, unfortunately it did involve quite a few stairs to get the best views. Oh well, our legs may have ached after but at least we got some good pictures.
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia charlieandsam... is always a bonus.
We decided to drive to the lookout just out of town, which offered a great view of the most famous rock formations here, "The 3 Sisters".
The entire experience was soundtracked by an aboriginal dude playing his ...
