... to warm my frozen ears and hands. The shop had hand made items made by the shopkeeper’s wife. They sold a lot of Mapuche (pronounced Mah-poo-chay) handcrafted items and outside the shop was a typical Mapuche statue.

We venture on down the path and cross a bridge and waiting for us at the end of the path was a rushing waterfall. The thunderous sound of the water breaking against the rocks could be heard even before we made it to the end of the ...
Puerto Varas, CL.09, Chile nakiaford... and as it was full of people we figured they weren't trying to kidnap us so we got in. what we quickly realised was that this trip was going to be a whole lot more interesting than previously thought as it was entirely in spanish. But hey ho, we'll be fine we thought. 5 minutes later, we had driven from our b&b to the waterfront. Where we stopped for 30 minutes to take pictures. In the town where we had just spent the previous 2 days. Then we set off, we knew ...
puerto varas, Chile chickpealarry... his wife, Chascona, which means (in an endearing way) messy, tussled hair, like the way you wake up every day of your life. The living room is built to feel like a lighthouse with curved, longwood windows overlooking Santiago. Of course, ever since 1991, the ...
Puerto Varas, Patagonia, Chile benandlindsey... so we went to one of the hot springs near the active volcano to relax and get massages. It turned out to be a great massage. The hot springs were relaxing, but a little bit warm for such a hot day. We had to head back for our big New Years celebration in our hotel. New Years Eve was hilarious. We were certainly the only Americans at the hotel and definitely the youngest, except for a few teenagers who came ...
Puerto Varas, Chile dcsalsera... sign of human activity we saw for days. Bit of a nightmare on return to Puerto Montt - Andy couldn´t find his backpack and fishing rod! - swore he´d put them in the jeep home, so thought he´d left them on the last beach. Turns out he did actually leave them in the kayak so had to go back the next day (another 30km) to pick them up! FYI we hired our kayaks from a guy called Thomas, contactable at www.kayakaustral@hotmail.com.
Puerto Montt, Chile andyestherblog... was just a burger with cheese, no onions or sauce or pickle, nothing. When we asked them where all of that was they said "oh, you wanted a regular cheeseburger?" to which I replied "Well, yes, a cheeseburger". She then explained to me, as if I was the dumbest peron in the world, that if you want a regular cheeseburger you have to ask for a "regular cheeseburger" otherwise it comes with nothing on it. Now is it just me or is that just plain ...
Puerto Montt, Chile robandjoan... a card game at the hostel and joined in. A few games later I was walking around on my knees as a forfeit for loosing the game, doh! it then proceeded to a drinking game and the rest as they say is... The next morning we were not feeling the best but we still managed to take a bus to the national park. Tierra del Fuego is one of the best parks in Patagonia, with beautiful lakes surrounded by fresh snow capped mountains and the skies ...
Puerto Montt, Lake District, Chile grimsey... neither erupted whilst we were there, although another one - Chaiten - about 150km away did, and we were told that if the weather changer direction, our town would have been completely covered in ash! We're guessing you guys must have seen or heard something on the news. Anyway, we only really had one day to do anything, so 8 of us put our heads (and money) together, and decided to pack a picnic lunch (chicken & cheese rolls ... and vino, of course ...
Puerto Varas, Lake District, Chile traylertravels... a street away from us in Islington so discussed local pubs etc for a while and a couple of very pretty American girls from LA who I couldn't prise Terry away from. The rain came down harder and as on the last leg of the journey they had to separate us into smaller coaches as there were lots of mud slides down the mountains. A bit scary but the ...
