We left South Carolina in the rain with bikers coming in for their BikeFest (hope it dries up for them). We are having to travel up US 17 since we are heading to the Outer Banks and it is slow going. Terry will get up to speed only to get to a red light, so needless to say he was pooped from driving 3 hours. This place brought back memories. The only other time I was in Jacksonville, NC was last year when Charlotte got the big snowstorm that had the airport shut down off and on for 4 days (mostly shut down). The cool thing about this hike was that we are right on the coast and starting to get into more southern tropical weather (although it doesn't feel like it right now) so we would walk between colorful leaves changing and evergreens and then into a tropical swamp filled with ferns and vines. It was a cool experience and made for a nice relaxing hike. The one thing we were on the alert for was hunters though. We ...

... I toughed out the wetness to hurry the trip south as a major cold system is due to hit Friday. The sooner we get south the better. As today wore on we paid the price for sleeping in. Missed the 1000 opening of Onslow Beach bridge and lost 1/2 hour. Because of this delay we also missed the 1300 opening at Surf City bridge. It was apparent that we'd be arriving at the Banks Channel ...
