Puno - training for altitude

Monday morning, bright and early we were up and ready at Cusco station, ready for the 10 hour train trip to Puno and Lake Titicaca. Jane was feeling a lot better when we boarded - so much so that she ordered wine for lunch - but was concerned that we were climbing another 1,000 metres. The train, whilst not as plush as the Hiram Bingham, was pretty spectacular. It had a great observation car at the back. Entertainment on board included a band and a fashion show Our company for the trip was tw...

Day 126 - Puno - Save yourself $100

... unique. We calculated that $220USD was about 700soles, and since we recently had a three course meal for 10 soles, that would mean you could feed 70 people for one ticket. A whole trainload of tourists could probably feed a whole town. It’s an extravagance I am sure that is not lost on the Peruvian people who would struggle to earn that amount in a month, and I would bet that the profit from these three times a week journeys doesn’t benefit the locals. To all tourists ...

Our family consisted of mother, father, sister 15 and brother 8. The mother came to get us and brought us to her home. We were each given a beanie to wear and suposidly the different designs tell what family you are from. Our room was on the second ...

... kebobs at a restaurant called Tutilani (I think), Matjea and I departed. I bought my bus ticket for Cusco (San Luis) and headed back to Posada Don Giorgio. I was offered the same room with 2 beds and charged 75 soles instead of the usual 90. I watched some cable TV (eNGLISH cnn) after 4 weeks without none. I found myself quickly annoyed and shut it off. I had a quiet restful sleep and awoke ready for my trip to Cusco.

... sorry so no stories from that angle... On the way home I slipped over in the mud from the earlier rain but the strangest thing happened - I didn´t get any dirt on Isabellas bright clothes, or on mine underneath. Now I know how their clothes always look so clean here, they have magic dirt!!

The next morning we were up early to travel onto another island - Tequile Island, about one hour away. Amantani Fiesta, and The Harsh Reality of It All..

... way up to the fiesta hall through rocky lanes in the pitch dark where we were to meet with all the other fellow Gringo adoptees for a bit of a knees up. The local shop had been transformed like an A-Team job into an impromptu dance hall and a young Andean band were beating out their rythms of panipe and spanish guitar like a tribal dancehall. I was sweating profusely from the climb up the hill and felling like a proper t**t when we arrived but was dragged straight into a circle ...
