Lost city of the Incas

I think every entry will begin with WOW!-that´s how I feel. We arrived in Manta, Ecuador on Jan. 17th & 88 of us were quickly whisked off the ship for 2 airplane flights & a bus ride to Cusco, the capitol of Peru. We´ve been staying at the Libertador Palacio Del Inka, a 5 star hotel. The only bad thing is the altitude. Cusco is about 12,000 ft. above sea level & I thought this is where I´d have the fatal heart attack. I´ve been taking altitude sickness meds but that only prevents the runs, he...

Back from Machu Picchu

We are back from our trip to Machu Picchu: No one warned me about the ¨"Oh My God" curves on the shuttle up to Machu Picchu. For some reason I thought that the train would drop us off at the site. The train ride on the Vista Dome was beautiful with airline type service and included meal and beverages. The views were awesome. So we get on this shuttle bus, and we start climbing, and climbing and climbing. Well having the strength that I do, as well as an intense fear of heights, I was able to ...

Tired and high

We arrived at Cuzco in the Andes midmorning on Monday after 3 flights and about 4 hours sleep in the last 24 hours. Cuzco was the capital of the Inca empire but was basically rebuilt as a colonial city after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. We are staying in a huge Spanish building with a lot of charm, which has been built on Inca foundations. Cuzco is at 11,000 feet ( over 3000 meters) above sea level and we feel the altitude. The hotel provides an urn of coca tea in the lobby to co...

Cusco here we come!

5:30 wake up. We leave at 7 for a 9 am flight to Cusco. I discovered another bag of souvenirs that I'm able to combine with the one already checked. Less to drag along. Uneventful flight. We're wisked off to the hotel. The air is cool but the sun is very warm. A big difference from Lima. We're packed into a small bus- this won't be like Lima at all. At the hotel, we're greeted with Coca tea in tiny glasses. The coca tea on the plane must have been heavily sugared. This isn't sweetened at all....

Goodby MP- Hello Cuzco

I set my own pace this morning- declining the option for the 5:30 am group climb to MP- the mountain and the gateway. Instead, I hit the road- that' is the bus line- at 8am. I bump into Jessica on the bus. She went to the vigilence hut yesterday so she's off to see the residential area & the condor stone. We both get our passports stamped with the MP mark. We separate shortly after the check point. The walk to the hut is pretty much straight up over irregular stairs for the first part. I'm pu...

Excellent Hotel

An excellent hotel right in the heart of Cusco. The Inca setting is magnificent. Service the best anywhere in the world.

Excellent location & accommodations. Would stay there again.

Centrally located & within walking distance to Cusco attractions. The taxi drive to the train station to go to Macchu Picchu is less than 10 mins drive & costs about 7 soles ($2-2.50 USD). Room & bathroom spacious and clean. The hotel buffet breakfast was good, in particular the fresh juices including papaya - pastries are quite good also. There is a convenience store less than a minute walk where you can purchase supplies & calling cards, We enjoyed our 4 nights spent & would stay there again. Hotel staff was great.

Beautiful hotel, excellent service

from spazgirl
We stayed at the Libertador Hotel Cusco for 3 nights in December 2004. The service was outstanding, the building itself was beautiful and the location ideal. The rooms were small, but clean and attractive. Although the breakfast buffet was decent, I personally was not excited about the dinner offerings in the hotel.

I agree with a prior post that this may be the #2 place to stay in Cusco. We also had dinner at the Monasterio. Seeing that hotel made us wish we had stayed there.

Nonetheless, I would highly recommend the Libertador Cusco.

Highly recommended

We stayed at the Libertador two nights prior to the 4 day hike of the Inca Trail, and one night on our return from Machu Picchu. The service was excellent - we were picked up from the airport by a very friendly hotel guide who also helped us book a trip to Sacred Valley sites on our second day, we checked in sitting on a lobby sofa while drinking 24 hour available free coca tea, and were provided with complimentary fruit, bottled water, and mugs in the room. They also stored our extra luggage at the hotel while we were hiking the trail. The marble bathrooms are very nice, as well as the pretty courtyard in the middle of the hotel which the breakfast room overlooks. I agree with a previous reviewer that the rooms themselves are a bit plain compared to the ornate decor of the public spaces in the hotel. It is in a good location, about a 10 minute walk from the main square. We had booked our final night at the Monasterio, but after staying at the Libertador, we instead chose to return here, as while the Monastario is obviously much more luxurious, in our opinion not worth more than double the price.

Historical Hotel

from barb1127
We stayed at the Libertador in Cusco, Peru for two nights, and found it to be an excellent choice. The original site dates back to the 1500's when it was a villa of a Spanish diginitary. Several earthquakes over the years resulted in destruction of the original walls, but the court yard still maintains the flavor of Old Spain. The hotel is spacious since the original homes of the well to do were a block in size. The lobby is very large and examples of Inca and Spanish art work are evident.

Some of the actual original Inca foundation walls are visible. It seems the Inca construction could withstand the earthquakes unlike the Spanish style of building. As was typical in the 1500's, the Spanish destroyed the Inca Temples and structures, but built upon the remaing foundations. Many of the furnishings in the lobby are original antiques, but there are also reproductions.

Service at the hotel was excellent and the rooms were spacious and attractively decorated. The breakfast buffet included a variety of choices. The location of the hotel was within an easy walk to the main plaza of the city.

I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Cusco, Peru.

Charming

from Whinbrook
Hotel a central and comfortable base while enjoying Cusco. Public areas are truly opulent and the old palace, once the home of the Conquistador Pissarro and now a large part of the hotel has been brilliantly integrated and preserved. The bar is superb with its Inca stone walls and modern glass walls. The coffee shop is a good piece of contemporary design but keeps odd hours (closing at 7pm in the evening makes no sense!) The main restaurant overlooks the old palace courtyard and is very atmospheric. The service was first rate and the food was good too, with an wide international selection along with Peruvian cuisine like guinea pig! The ancient receipe Inca deserts were lovely. Live music in the evening is an enjoyable bonus. The bedrooms were smallish but clean and comfortable although are plain in comparison to the public areas. The bathrooms were more in keeping with a 5 star rating though. To counter act the altitude problems the special local tea was available 24 hrs in the lounge (foul tasting but beneficial!) as are tanks of oxygen - one evening it felt like we had stumbled onto a hospital ward there were so many people sat chatting but with oxygen masks on! This is the second best place to stay in Cusco. We had dinner at the Monasterio and from that brief experience was in no doubt that that would be THE place to stay but at a price!

Great place in Cusco

from munizera
Very centrally located hotel with great service and clean rooms. We were very comfortable and the food was good. There was a constant supply of coca tea for the guests in the lobby. Beautiful place to stay in Cusco, shops were very nice and the hotel itself well decorated.

Great Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just returned from a trip to Peru. We stayed here before and after our four day trek to Machu Picchu. Both stays were great. The only negative during the first stay, was that our room was over the dining room, which had live music until 10:00 pm. So make sure your room is on the opposite side of the hotel. They held our bags during our trip. Upon our return (around 9:30 am), and they checked us into a room immediately. They even upgraded us.

Definitely worth the money.

Clean room, but beware of the flooding toilet and the light-fingered porter!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed at this 5-star (?!) hotel for two nights. Since we were doing the Macchu Pichu tourist circuit, we did not spend much actual time in the room. Our room was rather clean, more than adequate for our limited use. My late-night request for room service was prompt. The breakfast buffet was OK, but not stellar. I particularly enjoyed the fresh honey and the apple turnovers.

However, we had a couple of bad experiences. First of all, the toilet nearly flooded twice (exactly once after each use). The first time they fixed it, the next time I didn't bother waiting. I ended up using the toilet near the lobby. I also had a bad experience -far more serious- while I was in the process of checking out. One of the porters (named Jesus, ironically) was very insistent that I give him my suitcase. I relented and went to the breakfast room. I decided to return to the front desk to check whether my wife had already checked out and I spotted said porter digging into one of the pockets of my suitcase. I complained (in Spanish) to the management, but I never received an adequate response. One manager told me that the porter had been working there for 27 years and that "they would look into it," and another manager told me that "these things never happen in our hotel." I guess that it was my fault.

If I had known, I would have shelled out a few more dollars to stay at a far nicer real 5-star hotel, the magnificent Monasterio.
