South of Addis the terrain became more familiar. Mountains had now given way to the quintessential rolling plains, grass and thorn trees. This signified our return to the rift valley. Fun run for Unicef
... blue t-shirts and jogging pants we start at 9 am with the 7km run, and it’s already hot … We run along the lake side, cross the street and the roundabout, cooling down under the fountain, get little sacks of drinking water, and finally we reach the finish. Arriving in Awasa our bags have doubled in weight and are soaked right through and the streets have turned to rivers. We end up staying at a pretty nice hotel, but have to completely empty our bags and hang everything up where ever we can to try dry our stuff out. ... donkeys and wooden carts. Still many people use the old fashion way and treat their horses and donkeys very badly. These very thin, unhealthy looking and often wounded animals don’t get enough food and drinks, and get beaten while pulling heavy carts. I hear that there is a NGO in Hawassa that comes up for horses and donkeys rights! I wish these animals will get a better life!
