Snow Day

A travel blog entry by davidandmaria on Dec 30, 2014

The temperature had risen again throughout the night and was now up to -9c. And with warmer temperature comes the snow too. It looked like it snowed throughout night and it was still snowing, the car was barely visible under the blanket of snow.

After some breakfast, David needed to get outside and start clearing the snow again. There must have been about 15cm of snow so it took over an hour to clear the car, driveway and ...

Back to the Ice Hole

With most people leaving the cabin yesterday, we had the bedroom which isolates you from the dormlike noise. Without hearing any snores or people shifting in their sleep, we slept really well and were surprised that we hadn't woken once during the night.

We were just going to have a relaxing day. The temperature had risen to -13c which although cold, is considered warm and with the warm weather comes the snow and the wind.

It was cold again this morning, even colder than yesterday if we thought it was possible, it was -27c at cabin. On the warmer, Äkäslompolo, side of the fell, the slopes were -15c whilst on the Ylläsjärvi side, it was -26c. We decided to hit the slopes for an hour anyway, as long as we were wrapped up, it should be fine.

Katja and Joonas left to drive back South, Katja had to go back to work before New Year and Joonas was aiming to get to Oulu for ...

We didn't get up until 11am this morning, not because we went to bed late or were partying. You just seem to sleep longer when there isn't much daylight. It is still night dark until about 10am and the light will be completely gone again by 3:30pm. Bearing in mind that during that time there is still dawn and dusk, it leaves very little time for actual daylight hours.

The temperatures were checked before we decided what to do today. It was -25c at cabin and down in ...

Boxing Day Boarding

The alarm was set for 8:30am and it was a real struggle to get up in the dark. We threw some clothes on and walked along the path from the cabin to the house for coffee and cakes.

Feeling a bit more awake after the caffeine and sugar, David set about chopping some firewood for everywhere there was a fireplace.

After some porridge, we packed the car and headed to Äkäslompolo, a small village on the western side of the ...
