... over 1.5 million tourists each year as it is the source of a natural spring. It's wierd seeing a fast flowing river and then walking 50 metres "upstream" and there only being a trickle.. and then a bit further and no water... nothing but a big cliff straight up!

The town itself is nestled in a valley and is particularly pretty at dusk when rocks take on the colours of the sunset ...
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France darrenhough74Wait a minute, we’re not traveling to Italy until tomorrow…but we spent the day in Arles exploring Roman architecture.

The biggest site in town is the amphitheatre, or coliseum. Glimpses through different side streets pull you even closer like the hub it has always been. Huge in scale, some seating is till original and large towers give sweeping views of the ...
Arles, Provence, France 2totango... not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.

But what a sad story of a man impassioned by his art, yet rejected by all around him. To the point where only his brother befriended and supported him. Only selling 2 paintings during a lifetime, and even those that are given away ended up on hen-house doors and shot up by young passersby ...
Arles, Provence, France 2totangoCurse the Mistral - it has been blowing for 3 days non stop and it is gale force and freezing cold. It appears to have abated slightly this afternoon and our local guide informed us that it stops after either 3 days, 6 days or 9 days so we are hopeful. Last night it ws like sleeping under a jet ready for take off all night. Poor Big Mama got rocked around and it takes a lot to move her. A big ...

Avignon, Provence, France qyzhang... feet and a lot preparing for the trip to Montpellier and the Aust v Fiji Rugby game. About noon Paul, Mandy and Pru headed into Beaucaire, just to see it, then on to Nimes to arrange Pru's ticket on the TGV and ensure we knew where and how to get there and drop off the car. After some lunch the three of us then also headed to Montpellier. Montpellier was a rugby day so no camera was taken - what a mistake, the ...
Beaucaire, France paul_and_mandy... as the ones in the hills around Cannes) - many are listed under"the most beautiful villages is France" - some over-rated but some gorgeous. Especially like Roussillon - very colourful as it is sited near ochre pits with the most amazing colours. We were able to walk around the pits and of course I bought some pigments - hope customs lets them through. Took heaps of photos of winding streets ...
Beaucaire, France ronvivian... nook and cranny so not a pleasant experience. On the Canal we passed through little villages where we tied up and rode our bikes to explore. Most were once again making no effort to pretty themselves up. There were some interesting highlights, lovely old bridges, a huge barge where you buy groceries, an antiquarian bookshop, beautiful barges decorated by owners who lived ...
Beaucaire, France ronvivian... France through many ugly villages until we reached Colleaure. What another find - stayed the night with a room overlooking the fishing port and the old chateau - spent hours wandering around the village, fabulous colours on the buildings, took heaps of photos - a favourite town for Matisse. We again reluctantly left next morning to head for Agde and our canal boat. Dropped the car off at Montpellier after great difficulty finding the ...
