Historical Traveler Reviews Les Suites Hotel Ottawa
I can't say enough about this hotel. We got our reservation through Priceline so I'm not sure how much it really costs. The rooms are GIGANTIC -- it's a condominium converted into a hotel. Unbelievably comfortable beds, large bathrooms (our room had two!), every room has a balcony, there is a wonderful indoor swimming pool, it's just a short walk from Parliament Hill, comes with a complete kitchen... it's like having your own house along on vacation. This is one of the best hotels my wife and I have ever stayed at in our lives. Not a single complaint.
Loved the Daytime Location
But the area was a bit scary at night. Lots of beggars. The hotel is convenient to most of the attractions, restaurants and shopping.
The suite itself was above average, but a bit pricey at $157/night. The pillows were horrible!(bring your own). And the sheets were flat and too small and kept sliding off. The hotel charges $14/night for parking in addition to the room fee. They do have a tv/internet thingie available in the suites for a fee of $12/24 hr.
We will probably not stay there again.
Great Value, Nice Quality, Super Location!
Two daughters (ages 12/8) and I stayed at Les Suites from June 29 through July 1, 2005. I researched TripAdvisor extensively, since staying in downtown hotels is pricey and a hit or miss experience. Fortunately, Les Suites is not pricey and a hit, as previous reviewers have found. The "hotel" is actually former condos and in excellent condition (see attached photos). Everything was immaculately clean and in great working order. Housekeeping will do the dishes each day. The high speed wireless Internet worked straightway with my PDA. In fact, I was able to pick up two other Internet cafes from my 6th floor room! The indoor pool and excercise room are nice, including showers and lockers.
The hotel's location is right next to Rideau Centre, The Bay, and the Byward Market. Parliament Hill is a ten minute walk. The National Gallery is also a ten minute walk. The Rideau Canal is five minues away for those wishing to ice skate in winter. The War Museum, Rideau Hall, and the Civilization Museum require a car or public transit to reach.
We found an excellent rate on Expedia, but the hotel offers many packages and specials on its website. The parking garage is a bit tight as other reviewers have noted, but no major problem. There is a 24-hour grocery store and the LCBO (liquor store) about 3 blocks away. Those not wishing to cook will find a nice Presse Café off the lobby and many choices in Rideau Centre, the Byward Market, and surrounding streets.
The only caution is that a homeless shelter is "behind" the hotel, and the neighborhood to the east of the hotel is a bit seedy. However, this is still much safer than many surburban portions of U.S. cities, and not a problem as long as you have your "city awareness" and don't venture out late at night.
Canadians will note we stayed here during Canada Day weekend. The downtown location was invaluable and saved on many hassles by allowing us to walk to attractions and return to the room multiple times during the day. I can't strongly enough recommend that all Canadians (U.S. and other countires citizens too) visit Ottawa around Canada Day. The museums have all been recently built or renovated and are top-notch. The RCMP Musical Ride should also not be missed. I actually felt embarrassed to have the good fortune to visit Ottawa during this special period, knowing that many Canadians will probably never make it there (simply due to the long distance from their homes). All Canadians should be proud of how the country is represented in the museums, traditions, and ongoing daily life.
Great suite hotel - Les Suites
We spent 4 nights at Les Suites (myself, my wife and 4 kids aged 17, 13, 8 and 5). We had a spacious 2 bedroom suite with a pull-out sofa bed in the living room. Plenty of room for 6 of us. 2 TVs and 2 bathrooms come in very handy for our size of family. The insuite washer/dryer were terrific as our younger kids go through a lot of clothes. There is a well-equipped kitchen with full-size fridge, oven, microwave and dishwasher.
The location is unbeatable. A large shopping mall (Rideau Centre) is 1/2 block away and there is a good 24-hour grocery store 2 blocks away. Parliament Hill is an easy walk - less than 5 minutes. Byward Market is a few blocks away also.
The swimming pool is not huge, but was clean and big enough for kids to enjoy. The staff was very friendly. The manager greeted us in the lobby one morning and asked us how our stay was. When we returned to our room later, we found a small gift basket of chocolates in our room with his compliments!
Les Suites will be our choice when we return to Ottawa. I highly recommend it.
Stayed two nights in May 2004. Paid only US$64.00 per night through Hotwire. Rooms were excellent, very clean and comfortable. Location is right downtown Ottawa close to the Rideau Centre and only 10 mins walk from Parliament Hill. Parking is in the multi-story complex adjacent to the hotel. The elevators were a pain though - very slow and frustrating. Overall highly recommended.
A Pleasant Stay
I stayed with my husband and two kids, aged 4 and 6, in a 2-bedroom suite the weekend of February 11-13 2005. We got the Winterlude Package which included parking, continental breakfast, and Beaver Tail coupons for $297.50 per night. Parking was extremely tricky, given the pillars and tight parking spots. Fortunately parking is indoor and on several levels so there are a lot of spaces. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member upon arrival and check-in went smoothly. Unfortunately we were given a smoking room which stank and so we packed up and got another room on the 10th floor. If you want to be close to the pool, be sure to ask for a room on the 5th floor, as that is where the fitness facilities, sauna, steam room, hot tub and pool are located (Towels and lockers are supplied). Elevators are quite slow, although there are 3 of them. As for breakfast, be sure to ask for your vouchers as soon as you arrive, as none were given to us on arrival. Breakfast is limited, however, so I would not recommend paying extra for a such a package. All you get is juice, coffee or tea, croissant or muffin, and a fruit salad. There is no dining room in the hotel, only a Presse Café, where you pick up your breakfast. Had I known, I would have packed some breakfast stuff from the grocery store and made my own in the fully equipped kitchen in our suite. The suite itself is functional, with full kitchen, washer and dryer, living room, dining room and plenty of closet space. The one bathroom is quite small, as are the beds. The decor is bland, but clean. There are extra towels under the bathroom sink, which we found handy. The hotel is located within walking distance to the Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill, as well as to several restaurants. We would certainly stay there again. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
We had family visiting and wanted to find an affordable trip for 6 adults. Les Suites was fantastic and it was located near the Byward Market. (If it was a bit warmer, we probably would have walked each day.) We were next door to a huge mall and there was also a grocery store nearby. The location was great. Our room had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, dining area, living room, balcony, a laundry room and plenty of closet space. For 6 people squished together, it was plenty of room and it was nice having 2 bathrooms and the laundry facilities within our Suite. Great value...we'd return for sure!
This hotel is a great value for anyone travelling with children. Its actually a converted condo building, so the rooms are more like apartments than hotel rooms. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen w/ washer dryer all for about $100 US/night. The furnishings are not fancy but are very functional, and the boys loved having their own room and bathroom. We didn't use a car during our three days there, as it was an easy walk to museums, restaurants, and the Rideau Canal. There is a cafe on the ground floor and a grocery store a few blocks away. We were pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed Ottawa, and how livable a city it is.
Suite place to stay
I got this hotel on an online auction-type site and was very pleased with it. I had never stayed in a suite hotel before and loved the convenience of it. There was a full-size refrigerator, oven, sink, microwave and cupboards (with dishes and cookware!), plus it had two bedrooms and a living room. It was billed on the site where I got it as a 2.5 star; I liked it a lot better than that. True, the furnishings are not fancy, but what a lot of room I had for the price! Nice view looking toward Quebec and the north. Service very helpful and friendly. Pulling in for parking is very confusing; if I had to do it over again, I would pull up in front, instead of the parking garage entrance. You'll have to go to the lobby to get a parking pass to get in anyhow. The ramp is full of pillars and isn't the easiest to park in; it will cost you an extra $12 CDN a day. The hotel is located in the Rideau arts district east of the canal. It's walkable to Parliament Hill but has a scruffier, edgier feel; more nightclubs, tattoo parlors and some panhandlers as well, and less of the office buildings you'd find near the hotels closer the Parliament. I found the area useful; there was a bargain all-night Internet cafe about two blocks away, and there is a very good full service grocery store only about four blocks away (very handy given the kitchen stuff!). Everything worked well (well, one TV remore had dead batteries). I'd gladly stay there again.
Les Suites Rules!!
We recently spent a wonderful weekend in our capitol city and stayed at Les Suites Hotel. Our stay was fantastic! The rooms were fully equiped with kitchen, appliances (including a washer and dryer!)The one bedroom suite was comfortable and made our stay very pleasurable. The hotel service was pleasant and helpful. I would definately book this hotel again as it was also close to the Rideau Center and Marketplace.
