The sun was shining and the temps and humidity were high. We docked early and cleared customs and immigration quickly.

After a quick breakfast, Rich, Rose and I headed out to the shuttle where it would take 30 minutes to get into a town called St. Gilles. The scenery was beautiful with lush green hills and the beautiful ocean on the other side. The highway was modern and we were soon there.

short walk to the old crater rim where you could look out over the lava plain
to the cone of the current active volcano which is Piton De Fournaise. It was a
5 hour walk up to the edge of the current crater so we decided just to walk to
the edge of the drop down to the old crater. What an amazing unique experience!
After leaving the volcano we continued across the island centre to the west
      coast ...

... but was built up until we got to the top where there were very lush dairy farms and little villages not unlike parts of Europe. We continued to climb on an even narrower and windier road before stopping at a lookout over a deep narrow gorge which had been made by the volcano millions of years ago. We then went round the end of this gorge, still climbing till we got to the next cliff which exposed a moon like area which had been a later cauldron of the same volcano. We ...
