island road which took us up to the turnoff to the volcano. We struggled to
work out which was the right road and did a bit of backtracking. The road
continued uphill but surprised us that this forest road was very well
maintained. We drove through a pine forest before coming to very low sparse
vegetation and then finally this bizarre Mars like scenery where there had
previously been lava flows. The last part of the drive to the crater rim was

After lunch we continued east and descended just as steeply and twisty as coming up but on that side of the island there is rain forest on almost vertical hillsides. ... bed/rocks. This is the bay where Mary and Michael stayed during their visit in 2012. It is great fun by the sea gap - and hard to hang on to the rocks as the waves push through.
