This morning we slept in as long as we could in order to be ready for a 9:45 departure from the hotel. It was a cool morning, Marjolaine needed a sweater and I almost did as we ate our breakfast on the tiny pool terrace.

... a flat red lava gravel plain whose colours were surreal. It was a
short walk to the old crater rim where you could look out over the lava plain
to the cone of the current active volcano which is Piton De Fournaise. It was a
5 hour walk up to the edge of the current crater so we decided just to walk to
the edge of the drop down to the old crater. What an amazing unique experience!
After leaving the volcano we continued across the island centre to the west
... but was built up until we got to the top where there were very lush dairy farms and little villages not unlike parts of Europe. We continued to climb on an even narrower and windier road before stopping at a lookout over a deep narrow gorge which had been made by the volcano millions of years ago. ... LR sun before we started the drive to the airport. We stopped off at the beach at L'Ermitage for a last drink. Although warm, the sun had disappeared and a short shower made parking easier as people were leaving the beach.
