We went to Paris for 4 days over July 4th weekend, it was plenty of time to see everything (jam-packed days) and even take a half-day trip to Versailles. We *swore* by the Rick Steves guide to Paris - I highly recommend the walking tours he highlights in his books. The museum pass was definitely worth the investment. My only disappointment was Versailles, large parts of it were under construction - including the hall of mirrors (they had one panel of mirrors open) and it was too crowded to en...

While I am over here many of us plan on taking lots of weekend trips to nearby cities and countries throughout Europe like Dublin, Brussels, etc. Many of these trips are in the process of being planned (like fall break, our flights and hostels are finally all booked for Italy!!) so we have been spending lots of time just seeing the city we call home right now, the city of lights, Paris!!
There is usually something going on every weekend here, either put ...
... museum in the afternoon. Both museums were interesting, but not quite as interesting as just exploring Paris on foot, stumbling across treasures and also some intended sight seeing.
It was an excrutiating 36 degrees Celcius today! We are at the internet cafe, which is air conditionedd (woo hoo) and are making some more Italy travel plans. After that we are off for supper.
Take care all!
... mentioned the celebration of Victory Day, the 8th of May. One of my former Russian students felt it necessary to berate me on the the accuracy of this date, apparently the 9th of May, and then presented an ignorant tirade fueled by Russian pride on the "winners" of World War Two, no doubtingly stating that Russia alone was the glorious defeater of Nazi Germany. After living in Russia and talking with many, one thing I learned was that this was a clear case of a ...
Paris, Île-de-France, France langkilde... of aluminum, steel and copper utensils, I'd say gewgaws is the perfect word to describe the stores eclecticism. It's been going since 1820. In 1818 the first coffee percolator was invented by a metal smith named Laurens in Paris. No doubt the first mass produced version was displayed to the world in Dehillerin's sparkling windows. Rule Number #1: the best day to avoid going there is Saturday. Saturday is chaos. Saturday is like the morning after St. Hubert's mass in ...
Paris, Île-de-France, France aliwallace... he'd better send someone to the stadium ticket counter and get those tickets, OR ELSE. Okay, he's on his way. Our minibus finally arrives. We throw ourselves in, and hurl down the road. Our driver Harry (pronounced 'aree') flies though the traffic, then sticks up a small sign reading 'special' in his dashboard and flies down the empty bus lanes when we get into gridlock. Way to go, 'aree. We are told that David ('Daveed') will be waiting for us with the tickets outside ...
Paris, France nathan_and_clemStarted the day off visiting the Picasso Museum with a couple of people from the hostel...it was good and reasonably priced! Spent the afternoon just hanging out in a few small parks and lounging around looking for souvenirs. We also went to see Notre Dame which was pretty cool and got to watch a band perform in the park outside the cathedral. We then met up and had ...
Paris, France helento... a great restaurant in the 6th, La Rotisserie d'en face, Rue 2 Christine. Absolutely wonderful and the service was some of the best I have had. Given that it is the baby bistro of Jacques Cagna; this is no surprise. All the plats were perfect and the desserts were to die for. The bread with sweet butter was a real treat in Paris as you usually do not get butter at all ! Well, the day after my ...

The event, called Life Parade, was just that, a celebration of life. The shirts being worn indicated how all forms of life, including those unborn and those handicapped are fragile. The catchiest part of the event was the dance number done by a troupe of girls on the truck-for-a-stage. The chorus included the words "Life Parade" in ...
