Eastern Europe Introduction...

... with free miniatures including a manicure kit). Spent most of my few days meandering through the Old Town... "highlights" included the Old Town Square with a compulsory stop at the Astronomical Clock (note to self: must google what an astronomical clock is as still have no idea). This particular clock draws a pretty large crowd every hour, although the procession of the 12 apostles was somewhat of an anticlimax. Then moved on to the King Charles Bridge (which was ...

Ragers and reflection in Poland

... his fate, we got him a good one. We decided not to push on to Krakow and instead stay in a small city named Bielsko-Biata. The architecture was cold concrete and the bad weather was ther icing of the cake. As we drove through the city we encountered a couple of rough looking local skinheads who were yelling out abuse at us. After carefully choosing our parking space we went to a italian restaurant and had a beer. The waitresses were really cute and were happy to teach us some ...

... direction and I never heard the train sound typically associated with a tornado. I didnīt read any Krakow paper regarding the storm but it was the main topic of conversation everywhere with hundreds of big trees down across the city. After climbing over and around all of the downed trees I reached the top of the hill and Kosciuszko Mound. A symbolic tomb (34.1 m high) of Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817), a general and national hero fighting for liberty and independence, heaped up in ...

Krakow, the energetic.

... of middle age castles atop every hill that could possibly support them. And they all had a "Lord of the rings" type of look. Very beautiful. Krakow is a surprisingly well preserved city. It was a fortified city and a small portion of the walls is still standing. Its central square is the largest in eastern Europe. The Wawel Castle where the Polish Kings used to be crowned survived WWII. The Nazzis established their headquarters in the castle so it was spared from the ...

... her name. True story. And not what you think either. In Prague I happened to cross paths with Meesh (short for Michelle before you think its too weird a name) who also worked on the island. But I knew shortly after arriving in Krakow that Id be meeting up with Adrian and CJ, two of my best friends from the island, and for four days we were back to our old tricks, acting like idiots, going for long afternoon sessions and taking the **** out of each other at ...

Euro Adventure 06: Volume 7

... as possible before we head back to Oz in mid-November. Between now and then we will no doubt be spending countless hours on very slow Eastern Europena buses and trains (seriously you have no idea!!) but as always having the time of our lives!! Oh yeah and we thought you might also like to know as most of you freeze your way through the Australian winter, that we have barely had a single day under 30 degrees for over two months now - it's been an amazing ...

... largest medieval town square in Europe. Around the square is the impressive St. Mary's church on one corner from which a bugle call has been played every hour for over 600 years, in the opposite corner is a nice tall clock tower from which you can get a great panoramice view over all of Krakow. The next I got out to check out the mandatory town castle which in Krakow is a big complex comprising an impressive cathedral, city walls and various other medieval buildings. Unfortunately ...

Poland: cheap food, salt mines, Auschwitz

... dollar. I had never tried perogis, and I love them. A medium size pizza (8 slices) is about three bucks. Yesterday we took a bus to see the salt mines about 15km outside Krakow. You end up about 200 meters underground, and there are these large vaults where the salt has been excavated, that have been turned into chapels. They have all kinds of statuary carved out of the salt stone. There are impurities in the salt, so it isn't white like ...
