A Whale of a Tale

... really close to the shore, so you do not even have to be on a boat to see them. We had planned to do a long 3 hour hike along the coast that day, but the rainy weather prevented us from doing so. We were also worried we would not be able to see the whales because the seas were unusually rough. The lady at our hostel recommended a short walk along the coast into town and a coffee shop with great views of the bay. We walked along the coast carefully ...

We got mugged...............by a baboon!!!!

... a mat on the ground, until after 15 years they upgraded all prisoners to metal beds. Eight hours a day was spent pointlessly working in the rock quarry. After he was released he went on to become the greatest president in South Africa's history. The island also had the second largest colony of Penguins in the world. The time has come for us to head into the bush..... wish us luck, Teddy and Brooklyn

Departing Uganda, South Africa arrival

... man, after standing talking for about an hour we excused ourseslves and hit the road for Elands' Bay on the West Coast. We arrive in Elands' Bay late afternoon and checked into our cottage. An elderly man named Brian greeted us. He looked a bit like Anthony Hopkins. Our cottage was beautiful, with an open fire and fully self contained. Elands' Bay is about 230km up the West Coast from Cape Town. It is very quiet, probably only about 30 large, established houses in ...

... Bay along the coast on the way here. We spent the last two nights in a quiet but pleasant hotel overlooking the beach at Camps Bay. Waking up to the sound of the sea and having breakfast on a terrace is great - weather permitting! Off to explore what is a very odd Hermanus and surrounding towns...... Claire and Chris

... was spent in Camps Bay, quite fitting for our very own Mr Gay UK 07. We climbed some boulders. Then we climbed a few more. They got bigger, they got sharper. My feet began to hurt, especially as I was wearing flip flops. The tide was rising and we nearly got stranded by a sheer rock face. Almost as sensible as jumping in Lake Bled in April. Thankfully, we scrambled up a snake infested grass bank to safety, not before we got slightly worried I might add. Until next time, Pete

Africa - Looking Back

... well, people. The climb up Kilimanjaro was long, the numb** of port**s to sheph**d our butts up th**e a bit embarrassing, and the numb** of oth** people on the route was simply stagg**ing. It doesn't seem worth it until summit day, when, despite an exploding head and heaving stomach, we reach the final ridge, the cold, thin air making us feel sleepy, and, to our surprise, weepy as the sun rose ov** Africa, us standing on the highest point, in the middle, with 4 ...

Cape Point

... could take a cable car out to the lighthouse on the point or you could walk, or hike more like, and we opted not to take the car. Thirty minutes and countless stairs later, we made it to the lighthouse. Half the way around all you could see was ocean, but looking back towards land you could see the cliffs, the beaches, and both the Atlantic and the Indian wrapped around the isthmus we'd driven on to get to the point. It was pretty impressive ...

Along with school-based programs, the program is reaching into nearby Lesotho to encourage safer sex practices by incoming truck drivers and the locals who trade casual sex for needed cash. (See previous days geological history) From the top of Sir Lowry's Pass one can look back across low bushland including some yellow-y bush that is not broom across False Bay towards Table Mountain (too hazy to see) and Cape Town some 50 or so Km away. A sign at the top told us that "Feeding of Baboons is prohibited". I did not see any however, apparently they are there. Hermanus Beach, 120 K from Cape Town, is quite ...

A thoughtful moment

... I suppose it had to happen this way. I am truly grateful for even the hardest times. For they are what have given me strength. So, Eddie my friend, thank you for smiling at me and sharing with me. And thank you for teaching me about respect. I can now acknowledge what would have been uncomfortable with a soft eyes and an open ear. By the end of our brief chat, I had made a new friend. I didn't give him money but I gave him my time. Perhaps we ask for certain things, thinking ...
