Do not be deceived by the Sighişoara train station surroundings. Sighişoara is an extremely likeable town once you make it downtown or into the citadel (the old walled fortress in the centre of town). We were here for four days and I cannot recommend it enough. Staying in the citadel was a bit more expensive than we had been spending (45 lei [15 USD] per person), but it was certainly worth it. Strolling around the citadel, you get the ...

Good times on Romanian Rail!

... I didn't have long in Copsa Mica. I saw the toilets and I would rather go to the bathroom around the corner in the bush! The train was late, I detect a pattern here, and I find it a little frustrating as the time of arrival is the only judge I have when my stop is up. There is no announcement of upcoming towns (like on Western trains) and there isn't much of town signage at the station. Most of the time you would hang your ...

... and party people.Nathan`s was different. For starters it was so laid back and rule free. There was no check out time, breakfast was in the fridge the whole day and there was free laundry service. Everything was sparkling clean and tidy. Though rooms were kinda cold at night and it was a bit too calm for a hostel but oh well it is Sighisoara. You go to Flying Pig if you want party. Sighisoara`s city center is surrounded by the ancient walls. It ...

Oh my gosh, I dined in Dracula's house

... conversation with the cashier- in English! While she was in the bathroom, a very handsome guy (a more cheery, fresh version of Prince William) stopped in front of me and gave me a broad, warm smile. My immediate thought in half-sleep, half-delirium: Oh, my, gosh, Romanian guys are super cute and friendly! Then I noticed a glimpse of recogntion in his eyes and realized it was the German guy I had met twice on this trip! He was the one ...

... s Guild, the Blacksmith's Guild and the Carpenter's Guild. However, with a dignified sniff, our museum guide noted that there was never a Baker's or Breadmaker's Guild, as there were too many women involved in this line of work, so they could not be granted the status of a Guild. Upon hearing this we all sniffed in sympathy too. I have included a picture of a crested banner, depicting the Tanners Guild. The banners are hung on an ornate spears ...

Transylvania... Less Spooky in Person...

... practically only went through $250 in cash, and that was living it up, with our last meal of big steaks, sides, dessert and coffee... ah... we lived like Saxon royalty! DRACULA's CASTLE... No trip to Brasov is complete without a trip to the famed Dracula's castle. Well, it's fabled as such... A bit of history, the fable of Dracula comes from a fiction. But the basis of the fiction is loosely based on one of the rulers of his time, "Vlad the Impaler" around the 15th century ...

... i, nu m [...] Și de frică Ambiție? Dăruire? Curaj?

... movement fighting a well funded corporation that has the ability to pursue until it's goals are met...but the resistance intends also to pursue, until the operation is shut down... this is a battle worth following...I'm glad I came up here to see for myself...but now with the snow, it's time to head down the mountain. But while we have been talking and walking around town, nature has been asserting its own interests. The road is ice covered...we ...

Weddings, Emus, and Dracula... Oh My?

... It all started just before 8 am. I had woken up early, splashed some water on my face and brushed my teeth. I was just lumbering back into my room when I heard my friend (the groom) outside the window. I was staying in the bride's neighbor's house, and he had walked over to make sure I was ready. "Dan! Dan! Come on, man!" I reckoned he was maybe a bit excited, so I squelched my normal retort for those who dare to raise their voice at me in the morning ...

Transylvania!!!!!!!!

... frames collecting firewood, an Eastern orthodox church in every village, many abandoned factories dating from the pre 1989 days. The train route led us through the less salubrious areas of villages/towns in northeastern Romania- many houses in states of disrepair - houses that we would never consider livable. Roofs on some houses are barely more than tarps with some insulation beneath. (with a satellite dish attached, however!) We definitely passed through some shanty towns. And ...
