Day trip to Arles

We made a half day trip to Arles from Nimes by train.

Being a small village we were able to see most of what there was in the central part quite easily. There is the main arena, roughly the same size as the arena in Nimes, and also the Ampitheatre nearby, which is mostly ruins now.

... it was the weekend and very soon after New Year's Day.

I missed out on seeing the Gardens and the Castle as I arrived late and they'd already done it.

From here we also did a half-day trip to Arles - see next entry.
There are other smaller villages around to do day trips to/from, such as Avignon.
Marseilles and Montpelier are also 2-3 hours away by train.

... which may have been nothing, it was interesting to learn that the Papacy abandoned Rome in 1309, and took up residence in a Papal fortress here in Avignon. This residency, known as the Babylonian Captivity, was to last for nearly 70 years during which time Popes and Antipopes vied for control of the church. I think the Roman guy won.

... Fast forward to 2012 and another Nimes show was scheduled.
This time fueled by a bit of redemption I attempted to purchase tickets only to have them sell out in minutes. I`d written off Nimes as a place I apparently wasn`t supposed to go to when a second show was announced. With a bit of patience and a few hours of refreshing the website the tickets were secured.
