A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... at the collapsing crest of foaming water, to then resigned, pick my way back to the car to clean off my feet, all to Greg's disappointed tsks in my direction. But at least I had the decency to get as much sand off before I put my feet into the car!
Here's to the Sun, and hopefully 11 more days of it! I can be cold at home, I don't need it here. But please do remind me next time I decide to take a trip that November maybe isn't such a great idea!
Ciao Ciao!! Benita

Back to the Roots

... I have many pictures to post when I get home, it's just breath-taking.

But I am getting by, Anna took me to Vibo Centre yesterday, to go shopping, because as she tells me, everyone in her family comments about how she always gives money away so freely.... because of how much shopping she does!
I will admit, I have been taken to the mall here three or so times now, and I have not allowed myself to shop ...

San Giorgio Morgeto

... Carere, Vadala, and even Ferraro to name just a few. It was a wonderful feeling to be so far away from home, but feel like you were just around the corner. We sat and drank from the fountain in the main square that I had heard stories about from relatives playing there as kids, and we got to see the balcony behind that fountain where my grandfather grew up. After hearing tales about San Giorgio Morgeto for 30 years, it felt absolutely ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

Last time I saw my daughter Giuliana was 4 months ago, when I dropped her off in Rimini where she was going to stay with my cousin Gianluca and his girlfriend Manuela, and start a course in Italian - it's her first trip overseas and she was a teensy-weensy bit overwhelmed. I return 4 months later and she's speaking fluent Italian, has worked in a bar for a month, been on holiday in Croatia by herself without having made any bookings, and has made lots of new friends, so I ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

Tropea is a seaside town that is not really on the international tourist circuit. However it is a tourist hot spot for Italians. Gianluca recommended that we go there so Dad and I stopped there on the way down to Sicily. It was absolutely incredible! The water was crystal clear blue, the beaches covered in soft white sand and there was a rock shelf that you could jump off into the water ...

The Italian language

... Italian or wish to learn Italian. The Italian language reflects what Italy is today: a country greatly changed and still transforming, a country that is not what is used to be nor as picturesque stereotypes would have it; a country with positive sides and contradictions too that just keeps on charming tourists from all over the world!

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... directions. I was almost playing charades with three Italian gentlemen just to figure out how to get there. When we arrived, the hotel had a "Shining" vibe to it and it was no surprise given that we were there during the low point of the tourist season. We also figured out we had no hot water and after a half hour or so figured out how to heat the room we headed back out to Tropea for dinner now that we knew our way around.

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
