... some tragic battles and in 1918 dislodged the Germans to start the massive pull back that occurred. It was a mud pit.....and desperate fighting to say the least.....I do recall CBC did a movie about it...and blew it....lol. The beer was awesome...unlike the movie....

Somewhere around that time I realized that I was sitting in the exact spot that looked to be where there was a massive crater from artillery explosions....I recalled from a photo ...

... we are, we had to park and take it all in. Seriously though,.. it was really interesting,.. particularly the element covering the story of his life. We left there around 4.00 pm,.. with an hour to run to our overnight stop at Crespin,.. just east of Valenciennes. We are now a lot further north than we planned to be and have decided that a few days in Belgium,.. headed towards the coast (maybe round Oostende), would be interesting,.. so the map is being consulted and new ...

Poignant maybe......?? Our last 'thing' we did as we hopped into Belgium, just 45 minutes or so from Dunkirk.

The Belgian fire service play the last post at the Menin Gates every evening at 2000. Usually a short service and some well thought through words. Often visiting dignitaries........and tonight was the Mayor of Doncaster!!!!

All very moving. Surprise surprise!

On the last day that we had in Lille we decided to drive to Dunkirk Beach, stopping along the way at a fantastic old German Bunker. The museum La Coupole was full of information about WW2. We walked through the Bunker rather quickly as it was absolutely freezing. after visiting the museum (which we didn't spend long at) we kept on driving ...
