... Christmas when it ends. To see it live was surely to live out a dream. We awoke early in a truck stop where we had stopped for the night due to some thick flog on the previous evening that virtually left visibility at one to two meters. A family had pulled in behind us to make their breakfast. With our shame gone now we are happy to roll out of the van rubbing sleep out of eyes as they stared over their morning baguettes. We had planned to see the Tour the next ...

I tried to resist, but I'm glad I relented.

After a short while, a car pulled up alongside me and the female driver beckoned me over to speak with her. The gist of the conversation was that the road I was on was too dangerous for walkers and that I should be following the official VF trail, which she indicated to be somewhere over to my left. It's not the only time I've not had a bed on this trip, but that's ...

    ... one!

So do visit Besançon if you get a chance. It's a lively, stimulating, historic town in a beautiful setting. Great restaurants, cafés and shopping - all the stores are having their big clothing sales right now (good thing I am so limited in what I can add to my load) - and not expensive. It did thunder and pour with rain while we were there and Besançon proved to be a great anchorage for us.

... 400 people, not closed until 1977. Those old factories with their brick exteriors and elegant windows are certainly less a blight on the landscape than our more modern derelict factories or abandoned shopping centres but sad nevertheless, as the villages are so small and quiet now. However it did occur to me that the air we were breathing and the environment around us as we cycled along was probably so much more ...
