Le Regent Montmartre Paris

I chose the Regent because I have stayed in dozens of dorm rooms at hostels while traveling, and, living in dusty West Africa as I am, I wanted for once my own private, clean room that I wouldn't be locked out of all afternoon, but still something affordable. I am used to being dirty and hot and eating poor quality food, but my american standards are still high! This place proved to be the perfect budget alternative for me.

The location was great: right at the bottom of the street that leads up to Sacre Coeur; right across the street from the Metro (Anvers). I could get to other arrondissements on the Metro in little time. Supermarkets, pharmacies, etc all available nearby. I didn't feel the neighborhood was unsafe at night, but I didn't walk around it after 10pm that much either.

The daytime staff was rather brief--but not unfriendly or rude. The girl just didn't welcome me or orient me or anything, but no big deal. She just handed me my key, and it was much later that she told me I was supposed to leave the key when I go out. And the floor plan is a bit confusing so I got lost right away. She could have been more attentive. The night desk clerk was friendly and helpful to me. There is a computer in the lobby but it costs twice as much as the cyber cafe, open late, that is right next door, so don't waste your money! There is a luggage storage that I could use even after I had checked out, as well as a safe for my valuables. Obviously, don't use the phones in the room if you don't want to pay an absurd amount. That goes for any place I've ever stayed.

I was given a single room on the third floor, small of course, but sufficient. Clean; 2 fresh towels, soap, and sheets daily; sink, towel rack, TV w/5 channels, hairdryer, and razor outlet in the room. The large windows opened onto a cute little balcony overlooking the street. It was certainly noisy until the wee hours, and started up early in the morning due to roadwork. The other side must be quieter, but with no view of course. The WC was on the 2nd and 4th floors and probably also the 6th but I didn't check. I didn't mind this since I wasn't in the hotel much during the day anyway. The place was so small and compact that traipsing up and down the stairs to the toilet just wasn't a big deal. There is a clean shower on every floor. Despite recent renovations, the showerheads were in poor shape: mine on the 3rd needed a screw tightened, so it just hung limply; the 4th floor had little pressure. I had to hunt around a bit, but the 2nd floor shower was PERfectly lovely, great pressure and plenty of hot water. There were only 5 or 6 rooms on each floor, and some of those must have had their own WC/shower, so sharing them wasn't at all a big deal to me. They were always available and clean when I wanted them. From my window, the top of the campanile of Sacre Coeur showed a little over the roof of the building across the street. Maybe the top (6th) floor shows a good portion of SC, but it didn't seem like such a big deal not to have a view.

The hotel was full of a choral group of teenage girls when I was there. Every time I was in the passageways, I could hear their giggles and screams and general noise quite clearly, but in my room, I could hear nothing through the walls, even from my neighbors.

There was no fan in my room. It cooled down later at night enough to sleep, but only with the windows and curtains wide open to the street noise. July and August must be impossibly hot. I don't expect AC out of any 2 star hotel in Paris, but even a floor fan would have been really nice. The night clerk said he had just learned that day that they would start installing AC, but that will surely take a while.

As for the breakfast, it was wonderful! I don't understand all the criticism on other postings here. Two kinds of cereals, milk, orange and grapefruit juice, croissants, rolls, two kinds of sliced bread, butter and jam, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and newspapers in english and french. I think there was a toaster available also. It was all self-serve. There was a woman there keeping it all well supplied, but no one was controlling how much we took to eat. If it isn't included in your room price, 6 euros IS a little expensive, but you can eat as much as you like and then head into the city early instead of looking around for a cafe that's open, which wouldn't be all that much cheaper anyway. When I left the Regent, I went to a 5 star hotel in the suburbs with my family and the self-serve breakfast was TERRIBLE! I don't see how the Regent could make it any better. Even their croissants were yummier. It was all so Satisfying!

All in all, I felt secure, thought that it was comfortable and clean. As a budget traveller, the Regent really made my trip to Paris so much better. I already intend to stay there again when I am there this winter. So apart from making ALL their showers as wonderful as the 2nd floor's, I really have no negative criticism of the Regent. Sorry this is long, but just want to be thorough for travelers as fastidious as I am! Thanks!

I felt that, for the price, this hotel was acceptable. The double room we had was clean, and had an ensuite bathroom with shower (with a broken shower door), sink and toilet. There was enough room for me and my partner to live comfortably enough, and there was also a large window opening out onto a balcony. Our room was at the back of the hotel, so we didn't have a view of the Sacre Coeur. At night, and well into the early morning, the streets around the hotel are noisy, with traffic and people shouting until past dawn. So if you're a light sleeper, or expecing some peace and quiet, it's probably not the hotel for you. This is a fairly busy area, quite close to Pigalle, with a number of shops nearby, including a cash machine, pharmacy, coffee shops and small supermarkets.

The breakfast at the hotel is pretty rubbish - instant coffee, bread, croissants, jam and butter and fruit juice, but in v.small quantities and quite low quality. It seemed as though they also weren't too keen on letting people know that it was included in the price of the room. The room was cleaned and the bed made up each day, with fresh towels provided. The hotel staff seemed fine, and able to converse in a number of differnet languages, although the last reviewer's experiences do sound horrible. I probably wouldn 't recommend that a woman on her own stayed in this district anyway.

In the hotel there is a room where luggage can be stored and there are drinks machines (the coffee and tea are terrible, whilst the water and fruit juice are overpriced but OK). Most of the guests are fairly young backpackers, but were quite quiet. All in all, I think it's a good enough place to stay, but not one you'd particularly want to go back to in my opinion, although we had fun.

I came to this hotel as a student traveling in Europe. I am a female and I was not traveling alone. Two friends of mine were staying in a hotel close to this one. I chose this hotel for one reason: it was close to the hotel my friends were in. I couldn't get a room at their place, because it was booked.

This place wasn't bad upon arrival. The people weren't the friendliest, but i can deal with that. The room was OK. Extremely small, but hey, you get what you pay for. It was clean as well. I didn't feel it was unsanitary. The bathroom was in the hallway though. I didn't love that.

All in all the place was fine. It wasn't until my first night there that I became distressed. I returned with my two friends back to the hotel. The man working behind the desk followed my friend to the bathroom and threw her against the wall to kiss her. She screamed and I came running upstairs. He said she was crazy for screaming. She was crying. I put my two friends in a cab and immediatley searched for the manager. This man was the only man on duty. I was petrified. It was stupid, but I stayed there that night. I had every intention of leaving the next day, but couldn't find anywhere to stay. The following evening the same man followed me to my room where I had to run down the hallway to my room and lock the door. He continued to knock on my door for 20 minutes. When I wouldnt answer he went down to the front desk and called my room. He let the phone ring off the hook for another 20 minutes. I moved a desk in front of the door for fear he would try to come in the room. I sat awake in my bed until the sun came up. I gathered my things and ran down to the desk. He wasn't working, thank God. I complained to the manager. I was told "Maybe he though you were interested in him." I was horrified. I payed my bill and left the hotel in tears. This man's behaviour was a crime, and I can not believe I put myself in that position. PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU ARE TRAVELING ALONE.

Having read some of the reviews on here, I got a bit worried about my pending stay in this hotel. But I thought it was absolutely fine so maybe I just have low standards?! The hotel is very well situated - you can walk from the Gare du Nord and there is a metro station about 200 yards away. The room was small but clean with big windows which opened out onto the street below (weren't lucky enough to get one that overlooked the Sacre Coeur!). The bathroom was large and, again, clean. I only had breakfast on the one morning and was included in the price of my stay. It was fine - cereal, toast, croissants etc - unless you're expecting a full fry up.

The only thing I would say that was a bit annoying was that the streets surrounding the hotel are quite busy and so, with the windows open at night, you can hear every car/moped/person talking. And it takes a looooong time to stop!

All in all, i'd say it was a good hotel for location and price. Would go again.

Le Regent offered me a clean room of my own, with new sheets and towels daily. My experience with the breakfasts was quite good--though they charge an arm and a leg (6 Euros). This was worlds better than your average youth hostel, but that's where the good time ends. As of Feb. 2005, Le Regent is still under renovations. I had to endure the smell of paint and walk over splattered cardboard and drop-cloths to get to the one freezing bathroom nearest my room. The shower, though thankfully warm, was a mere dribble of water from a broken showerhead and I got cleaner using the sink in my room (which was good).

Worst of all--do NOT use the phones in your room to call abroad. Le Regent is part of a tourist scam, though if they know it or not, I don't know. International calls made from those phones are billed from an unnamed place in California with the number 1-800-576-2118. You will be charged a $14.95 US connection fee and about $5/minute after that! These phones are in every room with official-looking signs explaining how to use them--I can't but imagine that the hotel is on this hoax. My enjoyable stay in Paris in now sadly overshadowed by the monumental phone bill ($300+) left from a few calls from the wretched Regent Montmartre.

This was our first hotel in our first visit to Paris during December holidays. Worried because some of the reviews were less than flattering, we were pleasantly surprised. Nice room on 2nd floor with balcony view, clean, brand-new bathroom. Plenty of hot water. Close to food markets, Metro (Anvers), pharmacies (an unexpected benefit), McDonald's and the Sacre Coeur. Staff was generally helpful and attentive. Good deal for the price.

was just fantastic,we had booked a room with a view of the sacre cour and we got just that,room 603 we feel was the best,clean,warm,not to small,quite,lift to room as it was on the 6th floor.

we felt that all the staff were very helpful.pleaseant,and polite.

i feel the bad reviews of this hotel are not true,and it can be off putting for some people to read them.the hotel was near all the attractions,the neary by bus stop,route 30 takes you just to the hotel and into town so you get to see all the neary by attractions,it was our first visit to paris and i will stay at this hotel again.

it is budget,and for the price it was perfect.

we atayed in dublin in a hostel this year in a room with bunk beds for the same price,so we had a nice room ensuite with tv and a great view for my 40th birthday.

i would say that if you are going to the hotel ask for a room on the 6th flloor if you require adouble,ie room 603 seems to be the best.

There must be hundreds of hotel of a similar price in Paris that are better than this ghastly establishment.

They do indeed have views of the Sacre Coeur, as they advertise on their website, but only those facing the main road on the top two floors - about 15% of the total rooms so they must have a lot of disappointed customers.

We asked on our reservation for a room with a view and were told that it should not be a problem but it was. But we were put in a room on the first floor on the main road where it was busy, it smelled of paint and the only space to hang a coat was a rack with three old and bent hangers. The only positive thing was the bathroom which had been recently refurbished.

The breakfast was chaotic. Two stressed out waitresses with too much work and not enough food. The two mornings we were there they had run out of croissants and we had to wait for a new pot of coffee to be brewed. We couldn't even share a table because they were all taken so had to share with other guests.

So next time I go to Paris I'll steer clear from this place.

My sister & I stayed there for one night in August 2002. Thank goodness it was only one night! We had booked a twin-bedded room (via the Busabout accommodation booking website) but our room had a tiny double bed. We showed them our booking print-out, stating twin beds, but were told "that's all we have". Of course they'd made us pay before we'd seen the room! The hotel only had one shower, which was disgustingly mouldy and was broken anyway! Luckily there was a wash-basin in our room. The hotel only had one toilet! The carpets were stained (probably from when the shower still worked), the wallpaper was peeling and there were holes in the walls in our room. We didn't feel secure in our room as the door and lock seemed flimsy. This was the first night of our month travelling around Europe and thankfully the accommodation only got better! I can only hope the Regent has had an upgrade since our visit.

This was not a bad hotel. Some renovation has been going on, but unfortunately had not made it to our room; that said the room was perfectly OK, and everyone was helpful.

My husband and I had booked a superior view with a view of the Sacre Coeur, but unfortunately, when we arrived we had been booked into a first floor courtyard-side superior room (only the rooms facing the road on the upper floors had the views). We explained the mistake, and asked to be moved to a room with a view, and the staff were very accommodating, and we were moved to a room on the top floor. However, the only room available was a standard room which was VERY small, and with a bed that groaned every time it was sat on. But it was our call, and at the time the view was the thing we'd booked the room for, and we were moved when we asked, so I can't complain really. And the bed was fine to sleep on, so my initial apprehensions were unfounded - the room was fine.

Having said that it really was a great view, and the room was comfortable enough and clean, the staff were helpful and friendly, the breakfast was good, and it was a pleasant stay, and if you have a room on the 5th or 6th floor facing onto the street, you'll have really great views of the Sacre Coeur. I think if the all the rooms in the hotel are renovated, this might be able to get a five star rating on this website - for the price, but as it is, it's a pleasant 2*, but not exceptional hotel, though I'd certainly recommend it as a nice enough budget hotel.
