Martinique to Trinidad

... celebrations in Trinidad. Martinique was remembered fondly in my mind as having wonderful French cheeses and wines. As we neared the island, our main sail blew out. The good news about sailing in the Caribbean is that there is wind and sun, the bad news is that there is wind and sun. The sun's UV rays eat away at the sails much quicker than anything Alaska can throw at them. But other good news about Martinique is that we found a sail maker there who looked at it ...

New Years Eve........What New Years Eve?

... one of the large supermarkets on the island. Shaz loves the French ones because the selection is huge and the fresh food is great, much better than the dodgy food available in supermarkets on the British Islands. After leaving Forte de France we headed North to a small historic village called St. Pierre. At first glance this village looked a little run down and not terribly inviting. The coastline at this end of the island is much different from the light sandy ...

Christmas In The Caribbean

We left Barbados for the island of St Lucia which is to the north west, its an old volcanic island with amazing peaks and prehistoric looking jungle fringed by white sand beaches and coconut palms. Our destination was Rodney Bay right at the north of the island to spend Christmas at the marina with the Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians, French, German, American, British etc etc . On Christmas Eve we took a bus ride into Castries which is the capital to have a look around at the ...

First Day at the beach

We went to this beautiful beach less than five minutes from our hotel room. It was super amazing, the fish actually we by my feet. Christina screamed like a baby, she freaks out at the site of live fish. She yelled at Nemo and flounder. Reduit Beach, St, Lucia's acclaimed best beach.

... t do it sooner was beyond us. And so, with the strong winds, we've done lots of boat watching in between pages of our books. We have purchased a book called "French for Cruisers" written especially with boating phrases written phonetically. It is quite a wonderful book. It has sections for "getting directions"; "food"; "weather"; "navigation"; "anchoring and docking"; "medical and dental" etc. We are all set now if we can ...

Heading North

16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

Rodney Bay

15/04/08, Tuesday, 22:30, Rodney Bay Dinner and pool was great two nights ago. Had two great days after that hanging out at Scuttlebutts. Met crazy Norwegian guy there today. [No, seriously, this guy was nuts. He and his friends decided to quit their jobs, buy a boat, and sail around the world. One of them had been sailing before - they made him captain. My kind of people.]

... it felt too close or a dive boat was moored. We had snorkeled the Cousteau park years ago in similar conditions and decided that between the crowd and the chop we would forego this treat. The wind had shifted from the SE so our sail down the Guadeloupe coast was a close haul with waves on our nose. We had a lovely lunch stop in tiny Anse a la Barque. The anchorage is deep and narrow but it was a great spot for lunch and a swim. We still needed to check in but having "missed ...

... met Big Papa himself a larger than life fella, who was a self proclaimed body guard to the star, restaurateur, Hip hop artist and general legend in his own underpants. He obviously recognised some fellow stars and proceeded to get us all legless on his special Assdown rum, so called as he explained that after one glass you better sit your ass down. The next day after Eric spaghetti had delivered all the belongings back to us that we had left all over the beach. We decided to go for a ...
