On the way from Florence we decided to stop at the Basilica di Superga which is situated on top of a mountain. It was built here as during the Spanish war of succession in 1706 Eugene of Savoy climbed the mountain to survey the Franco-Spanish forces trying to invade Turin. He apparently knelt down and said that if he was granted victory he would …

We woke in Aoste to blue skies, which meant a crystal clear view of the mountains bordering the valley. There are many amazing hotels around the world, but I honestly think you would struggle to find one with a better view from the room than the Hotel Panaramique. It's so beautiful, you just want to absorb it to replay on days when it’s dull …

Many activities on the ship; talent shows, galley tours, movies, and the usual relaxation pursuits such as reading. I am wading through the biography of Andrew Carnegie at ...

... off in very gloomy weather into Piedimonte and specifically heading for Barbaresco. We had not intended to go here but Ian said it was beautiful and we should go; so we did. The drive up did not look hopeful and as we climbed higher into the hills it got pretty chilly and we had to change into warmer clothes. But by the time we stopped for a picnic the weather was brightening considerably and so was ...

... off. Then the young man responsible for the other car returns and moves his vehicle out of the way. They both get tickets and a ticking off from the police. Finally 1/2 hour later order is restored and traffic flows once more. What a night! A tow truck had also been called in case the owners of the cars didn't turn up - now that would have been really interesting. We make it back to our hotel and get ready for bed. Hopefully we will have a good nights sleep ready for our food tour ...
