... in the centre of the country), but we decided to wait an see how the situation unfolded before making the trip. In the end we decided the leave the next day, which is when the rebel threat was announced ... but I didn't find that out until we had made it back to Conakry. Sangbarala was unlike anything I have ev** seen, a village of thatched mud huts on a riv** that joins the *****. The dust and pov**ty is v**y confronting ...

Conakry (Fr+Pt)

... even heard of pizza! Fouta volunteers should never complain....ever. But Halloween was fun. The theme was glam rock, celebrating the 30th birthday of three volunteers but I was one of the only ones to dress to theme. I was Cher. We danced. I had a great time singing all my Cher songs to the amusement of many. Mexican food was prepared, but I did not get any because I was too busy dancing and singing. Afterwards we spent a couple days exploring Labe and enjoying the ...

The Wedding

... until freshman year in college. I heard about him about a month after they started dating. He was thinking about going to my university first and Leah had it in her mind to hook him and I up. It didn't quite work out that way, obviously. I didn't meet him for a couple years even though our colleges were only 45 minutes from each other. And since then I've seen him maybe 3 or 4 times. Of course I've heard all about him so I feel like we're old friends. So ...

I'M COMING HOME

... any of you. It is completely unintentional. To help you all deal with me and my oddness when I return my friend Sarah wrote an instruction manual. I email it to some of you and I thought I'd put it on my blog because it amuses me. So here it is: Dear Jess' American friends and relatives: I would like to begin by thanking you for loaning Jess to us ( me specifically) for 27 months-as a token of my appreciation I'm ...

... them and not actual things she needed. That's where I came in. I like lists and even better I like to cross things off lists. So she would make a list and while she was looking at Bob Marley belts I was getting her batteries, buckets, powdered milk, flour, etc. It was a symbiotic relationship that worked out well. She was always so chill about everything. We got lost in Conakry- no big deal. Waiting 8 hours for a taxi-relax, where ...

A true horror story...

... car breaking down?!? 20 km away, doesn't someone need to get out at one of these small villages? They always have before! 10 km away I can't hold it anymore...and I didn't. But let's be a little bit more specific, I didn't pee. That's right. I tapped the lady in front of me, "Umm could you ask the driver to pull over I need to find a toilet." She didn't understand so I start yelling to the front of the car. "Monsieur, we need to stop ...

Culture Shock

... myself for the possiblity but it was overwhelmingly dissappointing and I couldn't imagine spending another week alone. Then I only got one letter. From Katie. Thank you Katie, you're awesome and I love you. But that was a heart breaker in my already fragile condition. So I sat on the bed with tears streaming down my face and Daffe, the regional capital director, looking at me obviously very uncomfortable and not knowing what to say or do. They ...

Officially a Volunteer

... Which it turned out not to be. The ceremony went really well. Our keynote speaker was the first volunteer in Ethiopia from 1962. His speech was amazing and made me tear up a bit. He was there for the first gunshots of the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia and stayed the whole 2 years during the war. Peace Corps has a little stricter policy on war zones and volunteers nowadays. Steve, our country director, also spoke. His term is up in ...

Mini-vacation

... join if they put their name, ship, rank and email address. But halfway through the party they made another announcement that really they were ninjas and they pulled down their ninja masks. It was hilarious! I obviously was a pirate, and a very cute one, I must say. Well, as cute as one can get in Guinea without a shower or hair products and limited make-up. The next day at 6:00AM we were on a bush taxi, again, on our way back to Forecariah. I sat up front ...
