Split - quiet but good weather

... so a lot of people in Split would have gone back to their villages or home town for the weekend.
Also explains why the graves in Zagreb looked so good the day too.
Went to Gaga which the barman at the first bar said if any place would be busy, that place would be and it was dead.

Saturday walked around the market, got Burek for breakfast and then up a bunch of stairs to get a good look over Split.
Such a beautiful ...

What we thought would be a vacation...

... chilled out and went to bed.

Of course what we didn’t know is that the next day, the island was going to experience a full on storm. We were told it might rain a little that day, but raining a little was a big understatement. From the time we woke up the next morning until after we left two days later, it was POURING down rain and VERY windy. We were house-bound for 2 days. The only time we went out was one evening when the rain ...

... something quiet. This spot is exactly what we were hoping for! There are only about fifty people at the campsite, which means that it is private without us being the only ones at the campsite, which seems to have been the trend lately! We bargained with the lady at the desk and paid for the cheapest spot but were able to park in the most expensive with the best views…they are unbelievable. Sailboats are going past now and we ...

... restaurant (with Arnica and Matt) up away from the town square and it was a nice little family tavern. Lets just say that the food was A-ma-zing. We let the owner choose our dishes and left it all to him. Olives, cheeses, tomatoes, breads, veges, and some mackeral that was just divine! Yummo! We made our way back to the boat ... via the gelato store .... and headed to sleep .... no sleep in almost 48 hrs ... lets just say I was out like a light!

Daily routines

Lets ...

Planes, trains and automobiles..... Part 1

... would not be sailing because of the weather. We did have another option of taking a bus to the other side of the island and then catching the ferry to Split from Supetar. I really did not feel like taking the bus, so I sure hope that fast catamaran is not cancelled. The thing about this ferry is that one cannot purchase tickets until 15 minutes before the ferry departs on that day.

We gathered our stuff and ...

... it became somewhat of a home for us over the next few days. The sea came up to the edge, it was sunny, and they brought drinks and food to our lounge chairs. Life doesn't get much better.

Culturally, we didn't get much from Croatia, but it was a great relaxing time. It was a good recharge for what was up ahead, and a wind down from the massive amounts of culture we have been taking in so far. Mm Mm Beach.
No more pizza please

We caught the bus from Zadar down to Split which only took three hours but managed to fit in some beautiful scenery. Mario was quick to point out some of the old concrete battlement buildings that had been left in ruins which were the only thing to marr the wonderful landscapes. I did not have high hopes for Split as I had been told previously that it was a concrete jungle with next to no personality and as we were ...

... where there is an early Christian necropolis, dating from the first century AD. This has been excavated and there are many of the tombs still visible although many artefacts have been removed and used in other areas. We walked to where the original Roman forum was situated but the only ruins there now are early Christian ones. Unfortunately, the Roman ampitheatre was closed due to excavations at the site. We then drove into Split. We stopped for our city ...

Massive train trip to Croatia

We left Budapest under the impression that the train to Split would only be 7 hours, so we didnt bring much food, didnt bother booking a bed on the train. The train left at 3pm, so we thought wed be here at around 10pm. As soon as we got on the train, we are told it gets in at 7am!! We were not happy campers. Ane and Ben found seats, whereas i didnt. So i had no seat for 18 hours (as the train was 2 ...

Splitsville for Andy and Lynne

... the worst day, so we spent most of the day in museums. After our visit to the Reichstag, we headed to the Holocaust Memorial and the museum there. Along the way we stopped at a street vendor for bratwurst and French fries, which were very good. The Holocaust Museum was well done. It just opened last year, but the lines were so long last year that I could only go to the memorial and not the museum. This time we only had to wait about a ½ hour. [Andy: Interestingly, this particular ...
