Once upon a time in Cairo
Finally landed in Cairo, I had to mention this Egyptian guy who sat next to me. At first I found him interesting and later on irritating. He was a middle aged guy who just came back from China, works in a paper/publishing kinda thing. Since I looked Chinese, he just assumed that I'm from there. He has no idea where Indonesia is, not even Bali ( …
Hotter Dirtier and Tired
Out of the hotel by noon and off to the airport. Had walked for about 2 hours so got rid of any excess energy. Waited around for 3 hours for our flight and had Hightower sitting in the aisle seat. After 2 movies and an episode of Glee we started to make our descent. There wasn't much to see most of the flight as a heavy cloud cover. When we dropped …
Culture Shock
Crowds, begging, poverty, in-your-face street vendors, dirt, radically different culture are all issues that I grew up with in Mexico. Indeed, I’ve encountered it in other Latin American countries and to a lesser extent in the Caribbean. When we got to Morocco I suddenly felt vulnerable and anxious. So why was Morocco a cultural shock for me …
What does a pink Speedo & a burka have in common?
All,
Cairo is indeed a city of great contrasts. We had some extra time today and were able to sit by the pool. And yes, we saw a chunky man in a pink Speedo not far from women in full-on burkas! Dor those who don't know what Speedos are - they are men's swimming trunks that are like women's bikini bottoms. And, Burkas for those who don't …
The Pyramids are Great! Really!
All,
With the Pyramids of Giza within view of our hotel, Richard and I woke up this morning and wondered aloud as to if we were at the most famous site in the world!? We discussed other possibilities - the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, and the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro. At the very least we are at a place that is certainly in the …

Historical Traveler Reviews Le Meridien Heliopolis Cairo
Normalito
Simply loved it
I loved my room!!!! the bathroom was simply great, they just need to work on their showers, otherwise my four day stay was great ,wud love to do it again next year.
Excellent stay at Le Meridian Cairo
Having booked direct with the hotel and arranged our own flights we were somewhat worried about travel from the airport and what we were going to get. However, direct email with the hotel resulted in our being met at Cairo airport at 2.30 am and transported to the hotel. everything they say about the cultural difference in road etiquet is true. It is sometimes scary!
However, the stay was really enjoyable. The hotel staff were outstanding. Remember that a 12% service charge is added onto everything, so don't feel too bad about the tipping. The trips out to Giza pyramid, museum etc were excellentl and the escorts in terms of a personal guide are of the highest standard, informative and protect you well from the inevitable hastle of locals. Food and room were excellent and we thought the price was good value for money. We would certainly recommend it. Safety in the hotel is outstanding.

Lovely hotel
Gorgeous hotel with lovely spacious rooms. Excellent service. Location is a distance from the sights. Great Thai and cafe restaurants.
Un hotel precioso
Es un hotel precioso con unas habitaciones encantadoras y amplias. El servicio es extraordinario. Está situado lejos de los puntos de interés. Hay un restaurante tailandés y una cafetería estupendos.
Great choice for last night
This is a great hotel to stay at the night before a flight home. It is close to the airport, has a free 24 hour shuttle, and has several restaurants and a lounge. The thai restaurant is great with a Thai chef. After two plus weeks of dealing with all the dishonest cab drivers, dishonest shopkeepers, filth, and animal cruelty that is common place in Egypt we were very happy to have a good meal, a nice glass of wine and good customer service.
Is OK if you want to stay close to airport
I stayed in Le Meridien 3 times in last 10 months, each time 4 - 5 nights. Check-In is relatively slow at reception. Staff generally friendly. Rooms I find good for the business travel, 5th floor is non-smoking. Air-conditioning worked always very good and quiet, better to ask for rooms in the back side for quietness. Internet access (high speed, VPN) is available in the rooms but the price is relatively high, but consider gprs roaming is also quite expensive and slow in Egypt. Never had time to use the pool, health club. I can say the Thai Restaurant is OK, the others average with the food but service is fine. Lobby area is not very big but comfortable. Breakfast is standard and the same quality everytime, nothing special but satisfactory. Though close to airport and ring roads, if you have to travel downtown everyday, better to stay close to Nile area otherwise may need about 1 hr every direction (Cairo usual traffic). The shuttle to and from airport is very useful, if you inform the hotel before, a well organized pick-up from the arrival terminal is arranged. I feel the hotel is in the average and satisfactory for the business traveller spending very less time in the hotel and the price is in line with their offering. Stayed before in Sheraton Heliopolis, good with restaurants/services and more expensive, but I prefer Le Meridien for my stay in Cairo.
Disgusting - completely awful
We spent one night at this hotel and it was one night too many. This hotel is billed as a five star but does not even make three star standards. We paid extra for a 'club' room. All this seems to have meant is that we had to wait twice to check-in. Once in the lobby and then, once they realised we were in 'club', again on the 8th floor. At this point I really wanted to get to my room but the receptionist would not give the key to me directly and I had to wait for a porter to 'escort' us down the hall.
All of that would have been ok if the hotel was any good but in fact is was completely disgusting. We were in our room during turn-down time so we had to remove the bedspread ourselves. What we saw was so foul as to be completely unbelievable. The beadspread was so badly soiled on the underside that I was concerned for the cleanliness of the sheets underneath. Also, there was no duvet, just a sheet covered blanket and I shudder to think what state that was in - I was afraid to look.
The carpet was in a similarly disgusting state of filth. Bathrooms were very tired as was the entire room.
The only reason we booked this hotel after spending the rest of our holiday in the Four Seasons was its proximity to the airport for a very early flight. If you have a similar flight, stay in the Movenpick instead. Not only is it better, but it is actually closer to the airport.
Do not stay at the Meridian Heliopolis!
