Cairo and the Pyramids

Cairo - I can best summarize it as a very interesting city that is loaded with hassles. The city is very large very polluted, and very densely packed. It reminded me of an Arab New York City with its seemingly endless streets filled with mid-rise apartments. The taxis of Cairo have a reputation for wild rides and they didn't disappoint. I never felt that I was in any danger while in the taxi, but I would have bet good money we were going to hit pedestrians, only to have them literally leap ou...

Arriving Cairo - Pyramids and the Spinx at Giza

Arrived Cairo in the afternoon, my friend met me at the airport and from there moving in slowly in the heat and the traffic to our hotel, Le Meridien, just nearby and with view towards the pyramids. I just love to take in the pulse of what each country, each city pulsate and pulls you right into if you allow it to. The breeze and the different kinds of smells each different place is something completly exciting to me, coming alive. If you are so lucky to be having a travel companion, a person...

Pyramids, Mummies and Tombs

We are now back safe and sound from a brilliant trip to Egypt. We went on a 6 day tour and visited busy, busy, busy Cairo, and of course visited all the Pyramids, as well as Tutankamun's treasures in the Egyptian Museum. Went shopping in the hectic markets, and had a great time bargaining. We are getting better and better at it as time goes on!!! We expected to travel through miles of desert before we reached the Pyramids but were surprised to find them right in the heart of the city. Not wha...

Walk like an Egyptian

Andrew, Amy, Doug and Sarah go to Egypt... Arrived in Cairo via Zurich on Swiss Air about 12pm. Getting a visa was interesting. There were people milling about everywhere and there were no signs. We eventually worked out we had to go to one of the numerous travel agencies that were dotted around the security area. They gave us 2 stamps- as in postage type stamps- as our visa for about £15. So we headed out to arrivals where many would-be taxi drivers tried to persuade us into their cabs. One ...

Great day in Cairo

Today was a great day in Cairo, starting off with my usual free hostel breakfast of 4 sticks of bread, a hard-boiled egg, and and a cup of tea. Amazingly the breakfast hasn't gotten old, but I have been jones'n for a good cup of joe. The weather has been fantastic here, usually in the upper 80's almost no humidity (it's a dry heat). I was expecting the worst in Cairo - 100 degree heat riding a camel across the desert.....but it really has been comfortable. We decided to scrap some of the tour...

Arrival Day

After a long night getting ready and leaving for the FRA airport we woke up around 4am to be a t the airport at 5 for our flight to Egypt via Rome with AlItalia. Well or flight to Rome was canceled. They moved us to their flight to Milan leaving 1.5hrs later. Well without an announcement that flight was cancelled too. So we ended up in a direct flight to Cairo wit Lufthansa. Wow! Now I know why they are expensive the trip was great and we arrived at the same time we re supposed to with AlItal...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Le Meridien Heliopolis Hotel Cairo

Normalito

from cruisydoodle

from khurramw

Simply loved it

from khurramw

Excellent stay at Le Meridian Cairo

from KandPBedfordshire
Having booked direct with the hotel and arranged our own flights we were somewhat worried about travel from the airport and what we were going to get. However, direct email with the hotel resulted in our being met at Cairo airport at 2.30 am and transported to the hotel. everything they say about the cultural difference in road etiquet is true. It is sometimes scary!

However, the stay was really enjoyable. The hotel staff were outstanding. Remember that a 12% service charge is added onto everything, so don't feel too bad about the tipping. The trips out to Giza pyramid, museum etc were excellentl and the escorts in terms of a personal guide are of the highest standard, informative and protect you well from the inevitable hastle of locals. Food and room were excellent and we thought the price was good value for money. We would certainly recommend it. Safety in the hotel is outstanding.

from KandPBedfordshire

Lovely hotel

from Britireviews
Gorgeous hotel with lovely spacious rooms. Excellent service. Location is a distance from the sights. Great Thai and cafe restaurants.

Un hotel precioso

from Britireviews

Great choice for last night

from luvtotravelalot
This is a great hotel to stay at the night before a flight home. It is close to the airport, has a free 24 hour shuttle, and has several restaurants and a lounge. The thai restaurant is great with a Thai chef. After two plus weeks of dealing with all the dishonest cab drivers, dishonest shopkeepers, filth, and animal cruelty that is common place in Egypt we were very happy to have a good meal, a nice glass of wine and good customer service.

Is OK if you want to stay close to airport

from wsail40
I stayed in Le Meridien 3 times in last 10 months, each time 4 - 5 nights. Check-In is relatively slow at reception. Staff generally friendly. Rooms I find good for the business travel, 5th floor is non-smoking. Air-conditioning worked always very good and quiet, better to ask for rooms in the back side for quietness. Internet access (high speed, VPN) is available in the rooms but the price is relatively high, but consider gprs roaming is also quite expensive and slow in Egypt. Never had time to use the pool, health club. I can say the Thai Restaurant is OK, the others average with the food but service is fine. Lobby area is not very big but comfortable. Breakfast is standard and the same quality everytime, nothing special but satisfactory. Though close to airport and ring roads, if you have to travel downtown everyday, better to stay close to Nile area otherwise may need about 1 hr every direction (Cairo usual traffic). The shuttle to and from airport is very useful, if you inform the hotel before, a well organized pick-up from the arrival terminal is arranged. I feel the hotel is in the average and satisfactory for the business traveller spending very less time in the hotel and the price is in line with their offering. Stayed before in Sheraton Heliopolis, good with restaurants/services and more expensive, but I prefer Le Meridien for my stay in Cairo.

Disgusting - completely awful

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent one night at this hotel and it was one night too many. This hotel is billed as a five star but does not even make three star standards. We paid extra for a 'club' room. All this seems to have meant is that we had to wait twice to check-in. Once in the lobby and then, once they realised we were in 'club', again on the 8th floor. At this point I really wanted to get to my room but the receptionist would not give the key to me directly and I had to wait for a porter to 'escort' us down the hall.

All of that would have been ok if the hotel was any good but in fact is was completely disgusting. We were in our room during turn-down time so we had to remove the bedspread ourselves. What we saw was so foul as to be completely unbelievable. The beadspread was so badly soiled on the underside that I was concerned for the cleanliness of the sheets underneath. Also, there was no duvet, just a sheet covered blanket and I shudder to think what state that was in - I was afraid to look.

The carpet was in a similarly disgusting state of filth. Bathrooms were very tired as was the entire room.

The only reason we booked this hotel after spending the rest of our holiday in the Four Seasons was its proximity to the airport for a very early flight. If you have a similar flight, stay in the Movenpick instead. Not only is it better, but it is actually closer to the airport.

Do not stay at the Meridian Heliopolis!
