Next day I looked up the next few Shell servos en route. They have staff. While in France and Belgium I will be sticking to Shell, as I know what to expect, while sounding as Ocker as possible.
More rain into Belgium. Finally in Luxembourg the rain lifts and but Germany it's a nice fine ride.

2 cases of wine (ranging from pretty decent bordeaux down to 8 euro box wine - aka later to be converted to mulled wine as otherwise undrinkable).
Camped for the night in the Vallee de la Meuse very near the Belgian border and joined in a local French guy's birthday party by accident, though at least got to enjoy plenty of Belgian beer which I would have missed out on otherwise.
... it to be a very pretty town with the river Meuse (which is the Maas in Holland) running through it. We took a long walk along the street and the river, and then had a coffee in one of the bars. There was a beautiful little hotel across the river which would have been ideal to stay in last night, if only we had gotten this far! Bad timing!
Driving on, we passed through similar villages where the houses were quaint ...

Headed down to the main square to have some lunch and catch the next bus back to our hotel to meet Michael. While on the bus, we realised we would not make it back in time if we did the whole tour, so we decided to get off earlier and walk the rest of the way.
It was a fair hike to make it on time, but we got there just after five where Michael and Melinda were waiting.

The birds woke us early, but that was no problem as we had to be off by 8.30am to catch the ferry to Calais. We went with DFDS, and although some people had commented that the facilities weren't up to much, we found it fine – and its only 90 mins anyway. We were delayed for half an hour on the dockside due to a problem unloading the incoming boat (no idea what) but we had a smooth crossing ...
