... 10:30 am. We drove through the beautiful landscape of the Voges and "la route des grands Crue" where you find hundreds of vineyards. Lots of chateaus and gorgeous old villages along these roads. ... SEVERAL times. Guests had assigned tables with place cards...we felt discriminated against because we never got to sit at one of the "window" tables. :-) There weren't many people there the first couple days so we saw the same people each day. All were European, but we all greeted ("bonjour, bonjour") one another as each entered the dining room.

All the guests seemed to be there to enjoy the outdoors, and after breakfast people scattered.

Since we had the day off for school, the gang decided to day trip out somewhere in the Lorraine region. After hearing about the many châteaux in France, it's probably about time we saw what all the hype was about.

To keep it short and sweet, the town was pretty dead besides the château. But for a place that burned down several times, this grand home sure was beautiful! ...

We set off on a 3 and 1/2 week road trip to visit various friends in Europe early on Friday morning, as we had a 9 hour drive to Epinal, in the northeast corner of France. We were going to visit Philippe, an old friend who used to live in Vancouver but moved back to France many years ago. Our journey took us through beautiful countryside filled with rolling fields of grass, corn and sunflowers, and the occasional chateau on a distant hilltop. ...

... loaded and working. There was what looked like a wash house attached to the village pump. It had 1833 on the stone work. Women (and some men) must have taken their washing there and used irrigated wash troughs. The water flowed from one to another and also irrigation channels. The good old days! It was one up from a flat stone on the river bank.
