    ... Galibier, we were mightily relieved to get to the summit in the dry and sunny weather, and descend in the relative warmth of the June sunshine. Unlike the other cols further north, there was no snow at the summit.

    After the meadows and pines marking the ascent, the landscape quickly changes on the north side of the col to bare rock and jagged outcrops.

    We got the twisty bits of the descent done and then stopped at a pâtisserie in a little place called Arvieux. ...

    No cycling today!

    We've looked back on some trips we've done in the past and thought it would've been nice to spend more than a single evening in one place, so for this trip we planned a day off.

    Paul Henderson in his 'Cycling the French Alps' book recommends Briançon as a good place to spend a day off the bike, so we took his advice.

    ... so we were able to cane it all the way to Briançon, and look forward to our rest day.

    More by luck than judgement, the place we're staying in has a kitchenette, dishwasher, heated towel rail, bath with a plug and a fridge, so it's perfect for our day off. We washed and dried our clothes, and put our bidons through the dishwasher.

    We ate in the bistro attached to the hotel. Chicken cooked in beer, potatoes and a really fresh salad with proper French dressing. ...
