Francisco I Madero 82, San Cristobal de Las Casas San Cristobal de las Casas, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico, 29230
If anyone is interested in visiting Mexico, you should not miss the opportunity to see the state of Chiapas. It is nearly magical here. We have been staying in San Cristobal de las Casas since Sunday june 15th. Our school, Instituto Jovel has been great. We had "small group classes" from 9:00am-12:00pm monday through friday. I put small group classes in quotes because we thought that we would be in classes of 5 or so per group, but as the low travel season would be so fortunate to provide for...

So we arrived into San Cristobal and jammy enough as we seem to be these days, there was a French guy hunting for business. He runs a hostel with his wife and the place sounded great (although to be fair, anywhere would´ve sounded great after an eleven hour bus trip). He organised a free taxi ride to the place and everything.
We went out for a potter after dumping the bags and were walking down the street when we heard all this commotion coming near. It was so...
After leaving Copan we headed to southern Guatemala to a beautiful colonial town called Antigua nestling in a valley between two impressive volcanos. We took an interesting walking tour and learned a great deal about the Hispanic glory days of this pretty town. We then travelled through the mountains to the picturesque shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala´s largest lake and spent two days exploring the surrounding area using the quaint town of Panajachel as our base. We then ventured on our intr...

We arrived at 8am in San Cristobal de las Casas where it was raining a bit and bloody cold. Its even higher than where we had been previously and is always cold apparently. We left Francisco at a hostel he had chosen from the book and headed to one I found on the internet, Le Gite del Sol, slightly further away from the town centre. They had a room and let us check in and gave us breakfast too. By the time we put on all of our warm clothes and went back to Francisco we had been an hour and a...

... church in the world”, I mentioned when writing about shItaly, the one I said the Vatican could not compare to? Well in the afternoon I went to visit it. The church was a $0. 90 collectivo (a collectivo is a cross between a taxi and a shuttle bus) ride away to a small village half an hour away. It was a Catholic Church but unlike any other Catholic Church. To understand the church I will write a little background information:<br> When the Spanish took ...

I am in the Chiapas district of Yucatan, made famous by the Zapatistas when they took control of San Cristobal in 1994. (The Zapatistas are a left wing peasant group who fight for indigenous rights). I am watching a documentary about them tomorrow to learn more about who they are as I know very little at the moment. After walking around town and seeing many indigenous people in local dress ...
san cristobal de las casas, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico salsita... thick, muggy warmth. Turns out we had descended down to 50m above sea level, and had 2050m to climb (much more than when we started)! This was very disorienting in the black of the night, expecting to be in one climate yet finding yourself somewhere else altogether. Anyway, we arrived around 8am and checked into our accommodation about 10 blocks from the centre of town, then wandered to a nearby restaurant for a big ...
San Cristobal de las Casas, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico greensintransit... alkoholin ja suolan risteytyksessä.

So I'm watching them and it's a drummer, a congo player, a bass player, 2 keyboard players, 2 trumpets, a sax and a trombone, and a singer, and they launch into a set of deafening but amazingly kinetic salsa and merengue, and several couples somehow found the room to dance - really well! - and we were mesmerized and totally into the whole thing for the next 90 minutes. After the set we stumbled out, brain buzzed and ears buzzing, and headed back to our hotels.
San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico bocaleeOur stay in San Cristobal was short but sweet. We got the bus from Tapachula early on Tuesday morning and arrived late afternoon/early evening. Having booked into the hostel that we had found in our guidebook, we went to have a look around and found San Cristobal to be a really nice place in a little mountain town. After our long time travelling we fancied a good meal so we searched in vain for a pizzeria. At one point we did find an Italian restaurant but after I ...
