... going to climb 6,000 vertical feet. The majority of this route was going to follow the same route the pro riders were going to be doing in the afternoon.

We had about a 30 min van ride into the town of St Jean de Maurienne. From here we unloaded our vans and began our ride. Since the Tour was coming through the town we had to ride on some sidewalks and dodge pedestrians due to so many road closures. After a super short 1/2-mile warm-up it was time to climb. Today we ...

As the hot afternoon continued you could start to here the TV helicopters flying around overhead. At one point I counted 5 helicopters. They fly at different heights and have high tech cameras that can zoom in on the riders. The riders began to make their way up the mountainside. We took our positions along a sharp left hand curve. It was very exciting seeing the riders fly by. I got some great shots of the various riders. This day the pros had ridden 180km (111 ...

Raymond said that his new career goal is to become a shepherd in France. By now I was a little tired but not too bad overall. As we refueled at the van I glanced to my right and just realized why this climb is so famous. Up a steep ramp of a road you could see cyclist dotted along the ...

... Epine, which was 4.2 miles long
with an avg % incline of 7.2%. Definitely a way to wake you up in the morning! From
here we did a medium length decent and began the long grind up the Col de la
Croix-Fer. The incline wasn’t too bad but it sure was long! It took us a good
60-90 minutes (with a few rest stops) to get to the top. From here there were
some amazing views of the surrounding mountains. We had a picnic lunch at the
top and took a good ...

At the foot of Glandon the event was halted for 15mins whilst they choppered away somebody injured for a crash. Chris told me later that he was stopped on Glandon as well for 45mins for another chopper evacuation.

Glandon was uncomfortable for me but at least the scenery was magnificent, rolling green hills, craggy rocks, waterfalls, little forrests plus the odd village or two....made it interesting.
