... Austrians if the capital was located in Turin). Chambery has a medieval castle which housed the dukes and counts of Savoy, and it is linked to a chapel which was built to house the Shroud of Turin (lots of money went into housing that shroud!!). Unfortunately the castle was shut when we arrived so all we got to see was the formidable steep wall facing the town. The old town (called 'Ancienne Ville' on all the road signs) has a number of quite wide cobblestone streets, lots of ...

Back to Chambery, and home about 6:00pm.

Our hotel is an old building from 1737, and our room is huge, and the bed very comfortable. It is right in the middle of the old part of town and not far from the chapel (another church). This church was the original home of the Shroud (now of) Turin. There is even a replica ...

    Today is the
second last day of my holiday so I felt I should do a heavy hike as it is to be
my last one. I’m now in a hotel in Megeve, a fairly upmarket village
particularly in the ski season about 30 kms from Chamonix. It is also only an
hour’s drive from Geneva which makes the return of my rental car on Sunday
prior to joining my flight home that much easier.

    As all the
    local ...

Leaving the refuge the next morning we passed a memorial to a half dozen US fliers who had died on the mountain nearby during WWII when their bomber crashed into the mountain. Some of their remains remained frozen in ice till the 1970's when they were returned to the US for burial.

A really steep uphill this morning that seemed to go on forever but was probably three and half ...
