    Today was a relative boring one, due to the 5 1/2 hours we had to spend on the bus. The usual stops for toilets or lunch continued as normal. When we finally arrived at Assisi we drove past the Santa Maria deli Angeli, the church at which St. Francis started his order of Monks and eventually died. We drove for a few more minutes ...

    ... the piazza in front of the massive Cathedral with its ornate facade. A gentleman in the town hall across from it struck up a conversation with us and said it took 12 generations of builders to complete the structure. The town had a nice semi urban vibe to it and I noticed it is on the main train line between Florence and Rome. Easy to revisit without a car. :-)

    After leaving Cortona we slipped briefly out of Tuscany to visit nearby Assisi in the province of Perugia. Resting place for St Francis it was sombre to visit his tomb under the church there, however the rest of the town has been transformed into a religious tourist destination. What said it all was the carousel outside one of the churches that was adorned with religious motifs...note the Francescan monks in the background. ...

    Since the path brought us to the outskirts of town, we realized we were quite close to the UNESCO world heritage site -- the Basilica di San Salvatore.
