Earlier this week it turned to Autumn. One day it was warm (but overcast), the next it was half the temperature it was the day before and wet and cold. Nasty! After dressing warmly in jeans, a vest and a light thermal (for me), we drove to Bettona which is about 13km from our house. We forgot, as we have every Monday, that nothing is open. Undeterred that the first restaurant that we went to was closed, we walked through the small village into the town square and spied ...

... pie. Moving on, we made the soup and sliced the tomatoes so they could be seasoned and roasted. The soup was quick and easy as was the veal strips and the broccoli souffle. We returned to Montefalco to watch the finale, an event which had 4 teams running with a bull around a running track. This is serious business as the photos show (well the ones that are in focus anyway!).

... Following the springs, we continued North towards Siena. I could make out fields of yellow through the trees as we passed several farms. They were entire hillsides of giant sunflowers! We were fortunate enough to catch the tail end of sunflower season and took a break to get a closer look at the monsters! They stood at least as tall as me and some of the faces of the flowers were bigger than mine! I love this area! In the span of a few hours we have seen and ...

    Discovering Umbria

... we might have tried fighting the tourists to see where St Francis is buried, but from the outside, Assisi didn’t impress any more so than any of the other beautiful hillside villages of the region. We had the most wonderful time in Umbria, and as I said earlier, I am looking forward to seeing how Tuscany compares. For many foreign travellers I think Umbria is still quite unexplored, but it is a region that has so much going for it, and in our books, you would be crazy to ...
