June 11-13
Saturday June 11 I got up early to go out and take photos before the crowds came in on Saturday, as it was market day. I was out by 6:45 am and it was somewhat foggy, but vendors were already setting up for the market in the old town streets and the main square. After the photos, back to the room and off to breakfast. We finally got out to the …

Another beautiful day and after
breakfast we loaded on the bus and were off to the hilltop town of
Les Beax, about a 25 minute drive outside of Arles. A castle like
ruins on an almost a lunar landscape sits above a medieval town. It
was a very interesting visit and we wandered around the …
Viva Arles.
Thank goodness for Pepto Bismol. Claudia made a nice recovery from her bout of food poisoning, we had a delightful stay in Alassio, and would have enjoyed a day spent at the beach, lounging at a typical Italian beach club, sipping campari. As much as we liked our little hotel, there were some eccentricities to it as well. It was one of those old …
Day 5
Charlotte [wife] tried to do a 2 hour wash in 1 hour before leaving Paris. Mathematics win - travel with wet clothes in plastic bags!!! Left Gare de Lyon on time - 1st class tickets to Avignon. We had 1st class with an extra $11usd to reserve seats together. Worth the extra $11 without a doubt. I almost forgot one of our suitcases as I put one in a …

... the wind coming in off the sea was blustery to say the least!
Today, was not enjoyable. strong winds all the way until i hit the outskirts of Toulouse, not sure if the buildings blocked the wind or if just died down...don't know. But don't worry, it was made up for with the rain, yes, for the second time i had to get out the waterproof trousers. So the wind stopped but i got rain instead. to be honest, at that point i would have taken a hail storm ...

We enjoyed everything about our stay at Le Calendal. The staff was helpful and efficient. The location cannot be beat, and the hotel is very comfortable. It truly makes for a nice homebase for a trip to this area.

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Le Calendal Arles
Air-conditioned relief in June
Halfway through an 8-day trip through the South of France, my 18-year old daughter and I stayed for two nights at this lovely hotel, which struck just the right balance between the old (charming!) and new (free internet access, air-conditioned rooms). We shared Chambre 41, a separate-entrance structure opening onto the upper part of the courtyard; with its split bathroom and generous proportions, we could have easily spent twice the time there without feeling cramped. Located in the walled old city, we were able to walk everywhere we needed to go. On our second night, the concierge recommended dinner at "le Criquet" right down the street, and we had by far one of the best meals on our trip. If we ever return to the area, this would be the first place I'd book.
Excellent
Excellent hotel and rooms. Good location and correct price point.
Charming Calendal
Le Calendal is a lovely small hotel which offers guests many of the amenities of a larger establishment without sacrificing personal attention. Our room was decorated in a charming fashion and though it overlooked the garden restaurant it was quiet and relaxing. The hotel offers complementary internet access and the staff was attentive and willing to go out of their way to accomodate guest requests (i.e., making restaurant reservations, allowing early check-in, etc.). The premises were neat and very well-mainainted, but it was really the service of the staff which makes Le Calendal a must-stay destination in Arles.
Very good value, nice hotel
We really enjoyed our stay at Le Calendal. Excellent location right next to the Roman Arena. Small but neat, clean room. Good bathroom. Very nice dining & garden areas. Much better than average breakfast included boil-your-own eggs, meats, cheeses, fruit & cereal in addition to the traditional pastries, juice and coffee - a good value for 7Euro. Staff was very prompt and thorough with response to email request. (Excellent market in Arles on Saturdays.)
Loved our stay in Arles
We were pleased to find an available room at Hotel Le Calendal based on a review in Frommer's France. This hotel is right around the corner from the Ancient Arena with plenty of restaurants and shops in the neighborhood.
Our room was beautifully decorated, our bathroom was so nice (for a European bathroom!). The first night we stayed here, I closed the windows, shutters and drapes and my husband and I slept 12 1/2 hours!!! The rooms face an inner courtyard and it was so wonderfully quiet. The breakfast was very good, location is good and the hotel is lovely.
I'd like to recommend 2 restaurants nearby. La Caravalle is a new restaurant opened in December. We walked in early for dinner and sat for a while in the bar with the owner Audrey practicing our French. She's from Quebec and speaks English. Our dinner was excellent and at a reasonable price. The tuna appetizer and duck with figs were awesome.
La Giraudiere was very good, a little more expensive. The goat cheese salad with figs and walnuts was the best I've ever had! We chose the fixed price menus at both places which is the way to go to keep the price down.
Overall, we really enjoyed our visit in Arles. We recommend everyone take some time in their trip to stop in Arles and Avignon!
Great Hotel with a very Provencal flavor
This was the best hotel we stayed in during our 18 days trip to Europe in the month of March 2004. The hotel is so representative of Provencal colors and ambience. The hotel's breakfast was superb - best baquette we've ever had - even the table setting was so Provencal. The breakfast buffet was laid out so nicely. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. We paid 10 Euro to park in their secure garage - left suitcases inside the car without any problem. Highly recommended.
Great hotel, great location, great price
My son and I stayed at Le Calendal for three days in December. The room was clean and comfortable and the location of the hotel is excellant.
Everything we wanted to see was within easy walking distance. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant. One of the best hotel experiences I've had in a long time, particularly so, considering the price of the room. If I am ever back in Arles, I will try to stay at Le Calendal.
Excellent
We stayed in a number of hotels in a number of towns on a holidayin the south of France and this hotel was by far the best - easily a 3 star but only a 2 star because there is no lift it is a relaxing, comfortable and friendly place to stay. Brilliant breakfast buffet, lovely decor and a lovely outside courtyard. Highly recommended particulary as it is so close to everything - they deserve every good comment that comes their way.
A wonderful Experience in Arles
This hotel sets the example of hospitality in the tourism indistry! I am serious. You know these little little things that you do not expect at all from any hotel in the world? These people do it. We were very warmly greeted by the staff and our room was so nice (we took the suite, #3 Cypres is the name). It had a beautiful conjoined room with a very neat bathroom beautifully decorated bathroom. The sentence "Sorry we can not do that" is not in their dictionary. I asked for a mobile charger and althogh none of the people in the reception had one, instead of saying sorry we don't have any, they sought a charger and they sent it right to my room! Not only that, I was in Nice one day before visiting Arles and I stayed in a Best Western hotel where I 'did the mistake' of asking the receptionist for a 'hot glass of water' and I was told very agressively by her that it is 'FOrbIDDEN' for her to send water! Well, in Calendal it is absolutely heaven. I asked for a glass of hot water and I was sent a beautiful tray with a tea-pot, 2 beautiful cups and saucers, a sugar saucer, spoons and some artistic handkerchiefs! These people are just wonderful. You feel like hugging them when you are leaving just to show them how much they made your stay worthwhile. I strongly recommend this hotel as it sets the standards of welcoming guests and making them realy feel at home in a very clean, tidy, all smiles place!
Superb Value - Hotel Le Calendal
Hotel Le Calendal is a superb value. It is rated and priced as a 2 star hotel, but is easily a three star. Our room was large, and extremely clean. The bathroom was very western-like and looked like it had just been redone. Every employee of the hotel was friendly and spoke English well enough. The breakfast buffet was also very good and is recommended. The location is right in the old town with everything of interest a short walk. The only drawback to the location is a lack of overnight parking, but the hotel arranged parking in a city deck located three blocks away.I recommend this hotel highly and wish every hotel (especially in France) was managed this well.
