Monday morning and we leave base and climb into cloud, hopefully heading
for Grand Ballon along La Route Des Cretes in the Vosges but unable to see anything, stop for a coffee on the tops and there are cows in the field with bells - sounds like we are
at a music school, cloud lifting and off we go for the 55 mile La Route Des
Cretes around the ...
... and eating the sausage purchased from Fern Pass shop - lovely!.
Across the border into France and we are soon at our home for the next two days, not a word of English spoken by our hosts but we have the whole of the attic for our stay, evening meal out and an early night.

Tuesday 19 August
Still cool, but with sunny intervals. Decided to stay an
extra night here, to explore the local area.
Spent the morning housekeeping. Afternoon ride into
nearby, lakeside town of Gérardmer. Very pleasant forested, countryside around
here, with pretty chalet type houses. Lots of walks and cycle rides, with
skiing in the winter ...
We left our luxurious campsite reluctantly and are now back in France where our adventure began. The drive was long, but interesting. We passed by Lake Constance which looked very nice as a place to visit. The Zepplin was invented there and there are museums and airship rides! We saw two airships over the lake. Our route took us around the Swiss boarder, so close we almost entered once or twice! (It costs so we were avoiding it) Mrs Sat ...
... while Luke, Kate and the kids headed more north towards the ferry back to the UK. We checked in to a caravan park and plugged ourselves back in, showered, and made very good use of the washing machine and dryer. It was Bastille Day so that evening we followed the crowds into town and stood around the lake waiting for the fireworks. The weather was just perfect for it and the fireworks were incredible and it really was a great way to end the week we have had in this ...
