Dr. Karni Singh Road . 334 001 Bikaner Bikaner, Rajasthan, India
... many families from all over India claim to actually be able to trace their ancestors to some of the 20,000 or so Kabbas (rats) that inhabit the Temple.

In sticking with our "Get Out of Rajasthan as Soon as Possible" (GORSP) plan, the hope was to literally spend one night there... see the temple and get out! So immediately after arriving, we bought our bus ticket, went to Palace/fort at Binkaner (actually one of the most amazingly ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India volitare88Glad to be out of Jaipur we headed to the city of Bikaner, which is fasous for Karni Matta Temple - otherwise known as the rat temple where the locals come and worship the rats who they consider to be the reincarntion of their ancesters. Bikaner, Rajasthan, India sarahanddermot... concern was that we heard you had to take off your shoes (just like all temples) No big deal, right? We had 35 kilometers--21 miles--to ponder whether this were to be an issue or not.

2 1/2 hours later with SQUISHY toes and a smell I will never forget lodged deep in my skull, we knew just how bg of an issue it is. Rats pee ever 20 steps or so. They poop nearly as much. And this temple, which we brilliantly ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India hildreth75...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikela... camels are not generally rode upon. They are mainly used to pull camel carts loaded with all kinds of goods, from produce to construction materials. It was quite a sight, a proud looking camel with its nose held high, and on the back one of us. The kids cried out Angrez! which means English, because they are used to seeing white westerners riding the camels. They were taken a back when they saw us, and asked the camel drivers ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India kalsi_kaur... David's request for boneless mutton curry came with a thousand bones and one tiny bit of mutton that he couldn't cut!! The rice was a joke. We complained at length about our food and the wait for our air con to be fixed and after a small Geneva Convention Board Meeting, we got free beer! Our air con was indeed working...slowly cooling down the room with the gentle hum of a tractor driving down a country lane. We then realised our double bed had two single sheets ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mrsdp... in front of the scampering rodents. The faithful crowd around the dozens of holes in the walls, hand feeding the scurrying animals. Local children try to make a bit of extra rupees by finding and coaxing out the mystic white rat that is supposed to bring enormous good luck if spotted. I caught a glimpse of the pinkish, albino rat's head. I'm still waiting on my rat luck. Of all of the temples and odd sites I've seen, this is certainly one of the stranger ones.

Bikaner, India buddha_bellyThe bus from Nawalgarh to Bikaner was already full when we climbed aboard, but luckily I was able to extract the suitcase handle from my bottom after an hour and a hlaf and sit on a proper seat. After 4 1/2 bumpy hours we arrived in the work-a-day city of Bikaner, where we stayed at a guest house with a really friendly owner and arranged our camel trek. Eight of us set out on the camel trek accompanied by 2 camel carts, our 6 camels and cameliers. My camel was ...
