Road to Cape Wine Country

Lots of southern right whales off the different cliff paths, most 10-20m away! Amazing mountain scenery on the way to Franschoek; feels like Switzerland especially with the big roads. Franschoek surrounded by 5 mountain ranges. The Lavender farm we stayed at was great except the lavender hadn't bloomed yet. After dinner in Franschoek town, chokora started following Roohi saying that he had looked after the car (every sentence ended with a "Maam") and wanted some money. Roohi gives him some ch...

Wine Tour

Part of this was written for the review website

Ah, I knew today was going to be an excellent day! Not that I am a wine expert but in the sense that I do enjoy a drink :-)! Although, there still was the odd chance of being stuck with boring old couples / people - Having said that, sometimes even young ones tend to be dull.

I booked the tour at the Backpack Hostel with a company called African Story which I ...

... today he is reconciled with the past and is even friends with his former wardens who also still work on the island as tour guides. How they can stay there I have no idea. Truly a remarkable show of human spirit, and compassion. We we led the the main attraction if you can call it that being of course Nelson Mandala's former cell which is unbelievably small with just a bucket for a toilet. Again the comparison of earlier in the day comes to mind with the ...

More of the Beginning

... slept in two hour increments. I was awake for most of the time it was night. It was such a surreal experience. I was awake while the whole cabin was sleeping, and I just stared out my window in complete darkness. Occasionally, we would fly over a city on the coast with brilliantly colored lights scattered throughout the city. It was absolutely breathtaking. And then in other parts, it was complete darkness below us and sometimes I could see bunches of dim lights ...

... on to the harness. It was either my leg loop, which made me feel very unsafe, or somewhere where my hands wouldn't get in the way so I opted for the big knot of the safety rope, to the left of all the metal tackle and held it tight with my left hand. My right hand was feeding the rope and so was positioned behind my spine. At first the rope was so heavy I had difficulty lifting it, and I thought there is no way I'm going to be able to abseil down if I can't even start feeding ...

... the death of King Henry the IV the Catholics at the royal court started to pursue a policy of persecution, and the rights of all Protestants were revoked in the 1685 Edict of Nantes. Soon afterwards thousands of Protestants fled France to Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, and the Dutch, who were at that time looking for additional settlers for their new colony to provide suffiicient supplies for passing ships, granted land to these Huguenots. Between 1688 and 1720, 270 ...

... cabbage then the hospitals back home) and taken to Malishwa. I saw this really frail, stick insect of a human trying to get herself out of bed. Vicky told Lauren and I to grab hold of her arms, and take her weight as she walks out. Even with both of us supporting her, she looked like she didn't have the energy to make it to the car. The distance to the car was probably about 40 ft, but it was really tough for her to get there. I had to pick her up ...

... wine-makers who said it sounded too much like 'Cotes Du Rhone' - which, of course, it's meant to. Lots of their wines had funny clever names - like 'Bored Doe' - all related to the goats that live in a tower (!?) at the winery. So, after a second night at Stumble Inn, we'll be off to Cape Town tomorrow morning. Hopefully the weather (which is nice again after a horrible start this morning) will be nice to us so that we can do all the things we want to, like going up Table Mountain etc.
