Historical Traveler Reviews of Lato Heraklion
Lato Hotel is a pleasant surprise
from crdaus
This hotel is better than its advertising suggests. I stayed in an executive suite which was excellent value. It consisted of two spacious rooms with two balconies and sweeping views of the harbour. It is in a great location, within easy walking of the waterfront, museum, and downtown. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Free wireless broadband internet in the reception area is a bonus. Food is not so great, but probably of a similar standard to what is generally available in Heraklion. A little maintenance wouldn't go astray in the bathroom (I get the impression that this hotel, like many in Greece, were at their peak for the Olympics but will deteriorate rapidly without maintenance). A very big plus is the ability to zone the airconditioning and open the windows for fresh air and evening breazes.
A terrific harbor view

The Lato is a very nice hotel which is well located. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Our room was large and simply decorated. It faced the harbor so the view was beautiful. If you face elsewhere the hotel can be disappointing. The buffet breakfast was very nice . They offer free internet service to guests. Although our stay was not outstanding we had a great time.
Great Location

We stayed at the Lato Boutique Hotel during our stay in Heraklion. The hotel was terrific, and had a great location on the habour/port. We stayed in a superior queen room which was very clean and modern, portraying the boutique feel. The hotel also offered a good continental breakfast in the morning and free internet service. It was within walking distance to the main sites by the habour and we would certainly stay there again. Herkalioin itself is quite busy and not as charming as Chania but it is a great location to see Knossos. We flew into Herkalion but flew out of Chania. If flying to the islands, we recommend flying Agean as we found Olympic to be quite delayed.
Excellent

September 2004 was only the last time I went to the Lato, where I always go whenever I fly into Heraklion with a late night flight. I must have been returning 3 or 4 times. It is simply excellent and even the restaurant is fine and value for money for a dinner.
Very good - but...

Stayed here over New Year as part of a group. The communal areas are really impressive - a beautiful bar and lounge area, complete with indoor pond! My room was a double, and with no view of the harbour (worth making sure you get this, as some of my fellow travellers had views to die for) The bedroom was fine, with windows on two sides, but the bathroom really was very, very small - bordering on the ridiculous and it would be very hard if you were particularly large or needed to bathe your children! The staff were really sweet and the restaurant pretty good (although there are more interesting, authentic places to eat in town). Highly recommended as long as you make sure you get a view and a reasonable-sized bathroom!
Stylish Hotel with views of the harbor

We stayed here for one night in February 2005 and were delighted. Actually, because I was ill, I spent about 36 straight hours in this hotel room. And, I have to say that I would definitely return! Tastefully decorated. Beautiful views out the window. Large bathrooms. Gracious staff.
Modern and beautiful!

Stayed here is Sept. 2004. SImply a beautiful hotel, the rooms were modern and spotless, tasty complimentary breakfast, helpful staff, simple yet refined elegance in the lobby. Can't say enough about this great hotel!
Great Place, Loved it.

Recently refurbished. Nice Lobby/restaurant. Rooms tastefully done. Roof garden is especially cool, offering great views and a quiet place to drink coffee in the evening.
Electrical outlets actually in places where you can make use of them (take note Astoria).
Genuinely helpful, English speaking staff, helped me out in a pinch.
Good views of the harbour area, close to Venetian fort and Historical Museum of Crete.
Better (and cheaper) than the Astoria Capsis.

Staying in Heraklion in Crete was very useful. Not a beautiful city but very convenient for the Minoan palace of Knossos and so many interesting villages (Profitias Elias, Rogdia and so on). It is after all in the centre - east to west - of the island. We found the guide that was so useful and had great info (let others learn from it!) - just a wonderful amount of information about Crete as well ... We managed to drive pleasurably from Heraklion to Hania - beautiful! - and in the other direction Sitia (quiet beaches nearby).A busy place this Heraklion with every shop you can imagine, but a good base. We stayed at Lato hotel which claims to be and does show its boutique decor.....good views from our balcony.Next time I would stay there too as we still have the archaeology museum and the natural history museum to visit. Then afterwards we will hit the beach and the mountains.
